Arnott for a leaking rear strut?

Looks like my 2003 Mercedes sl 500 has a leak under the passenger side rear wheel. Afraid it’s probably the abc shock. Looking at the web i saw a new one at mbonline parts for about $1100 or i could get the rebuilt, OE front air shocks from Arnott
MERCEDES-BENZ Air Suspension Parts - SL-CLASS 2003-2006 (SL500 & SL600) R230 chassis

for $599. has anybody used these, if so what did you think?

"Arnott is pleased to offer our completely rebuilt, OE front air shocks for the Mercedes-Benz SL-Class. Each shock is painstakingly disassembled and rebuilt from the ground up. We have worked directly with one of the largest seal manufactures to design and test a nearly indestructible polyurethane seal to last for many years. Your price is only $599.00, plus a refundable $200.00 core charge (prepaid return label included). Once again, our design is not only more efficient, but it’s also much more affordable! Each shock is covered under a lifetime warranty. "

I’ve heard mb recommends you do both (car has 83k miles) but i'm pretty cheap and would really rather get by with just the one. Would this be ok?

They also have a 10% off code of 74V4-W7D.

I did one of these last year. You said you have a leak on the rear but you linked to a front?

Anyways, ours was just as good as the OEM strut. We changed just the one that was bad (front right). Sent back the old for the core and got our core back, no problems. These also come with a lifetime warranty.

Great company to deal with.

You will also need to cycle the system through the "rodeo mode" to bleed the system. some say you can just cycle up and down though the heights but I have a SDS so I ran the rodeo myself.

The front strut only took me 20 min to change.

my nephew is in the air guard with a guy that is a service tech at the local mb dealership so i get him to do all my work on the side. he has access to all the computer stuff. still waiting to find out if it's the shock or the hose. thanks for the reply.

I replaced the right front one with an Arnott 2 years ago....works perfectly. I did have to top the ABC fluid off after a week to get the light to stay off.

I'm sure there will be more to come in my future.

I did the right rear last fall.
The Arnott Part # is SK-2414
It was actually pretty easy; moving the exhaust out of the way was the only hard part.
I did it on the floor with 2 jacks and 2 jack stands.
No need to replace both of them.
Agree with others that the Rodeo procedure is needed.
I also flushed the system and replaced the fluid.
Amazing how well that car rides/handles now...

so when you flushed the fluid, how much chf 22 did you use? i am lucky in the my nephew is in the air guard with the local mb dealers best tech so i get him to do the work on the side. he said to really flush the system you need 10 quarts even though the specs only show it holds 5. he said it takes 3 to replace the shock so i went with 3. do plan on changing the filter out. btw autohausaz has it for $16+/qt.

I did 3 and saw a big difference.
The filter change and rodeo are actually the main things that help.

my left front and left rear struts are leaking, are these hard to replace by oneself?

I am not the most mechanical person but I am somewhat inclined.

thx

Go with the Arnott struts. I replaced the the one leaky rear strut myself. Sure enough the other one went out a few weeks later. My advice is do both, it's only a matter of time before the other goes. You only have to do the rodeo once and it's over, until the front ones start to leak. Like the other writer indicated, the exhaust is the only troublesome obstacle, not rocket science just a little time consuming the first time. You'll need a couple specialty sockets, cost about $10, if you don't have them in your tool box.
