Hello All, I'm wondering weather I should stay clear from a 2004 sl55 that has an "inconsistent odometer reading" on the carfax. Apparently the car still has a mercedes factory warranty on it, so I wonder if this reading was just a clerical error?? Or maybe there is really no way to tell for sure.
If you think I can still go for it, how much less do you think I should offer because of this blemish on the carfax? 2 or 3 grand less maybe? Thanks!
P.S. it looks like the inconsistency occurred at the DMV.
I would stay clear and move on to another one. The car is already on the high end when it comes to replacing parts. Why invite trouble by dealing with the odds of an inconsistent odometer reading? I'm sure you would find something better soon because the SLs are becoming very available. Particularly in the model year you are looking. So, take your time. Also, make sure you get some kind of WARRANTY. Because, for instance, a fuel tank replacement would set you back around $2,500. Good luck!

FYI:
That fuel tank baffle issue is resolved in the 2004 SL.
Stay away from a car with a Carfax issue. Someday you may want to sell it.
Carfax is NOT trouble free!!!!! They, like the rest of us, NOT PERFECT!!!!! And trust me, once they DO make a mistake, THEY will NOT change it, Even if proven wrong!!!! SO, Don't lose a good deal because someone made a mistake!!!!!

--interesting, the seller told me he talked to carfax today and they're going to "correct" the error. he said it was actually the dmv's fault and he was able to prove that. we'll see if it drops of the report
