Extended Warranty

My '04 SL500 has been out of warranty for a while now (42,500 miles). I really like it and plan to keep it for another 2-4 years or until the new body style comes out. With all the complex parts though, I want to avoid any major hits.

1.) Is the extended warranty worth it (official MB warranty)?
2.) Am I eligible (car has been out of warranty--but only in my name, all services have been preformed)?
3.) Does anyone know the approx cost?
4.) What is the likelyhood I will ever need to file a claim?

I just bought mine at the MB dealer. Here is my take

1) Yes, worth it (MB sold me the after market not the MB one)
2) Give MB dealer your VIN - they will check and let you know
3) $3900 for 4-year
4) Not sure - too many factors to estimate.

Does your warranty contract define exactly what is and is not covered? For example, what about "normal wear and tear" items like ball joints? Heck, even if one of the ABC struts goes out, they could possibly claim it as normal wear, no?

If I remembered correctly, normal tear and wear is not a part of it. I am sure they will try to argue "this and that" - then I will need to deal with it.

I bought it so I will have a chance to argue

In my experience MB does not offer 5 year plans covering 50,000 miles.

I bought a premium plan for my SL500 from DaimblerChrysler - $2,480 for 5 years and 50,000 miles. During my first visit to the dealer after I bought the plan MB identified $4500 worth of warranty issues:
Replace both front strut arms
Replace both engine mounts
Replace psi pump
Replace electrical outlet on gearbox
Replace left rear shock and service ABC
The claim was processed within 24 hours and it cost me $100. I still have 46,000miles to go and 4 years and 8 months of coverage. My mb service rep had nothing but praise for the interaction with the insurance company. 24 hours turnaround to get it PAID and I drove off.

Sure they do not cover brake pads, door handles and trim. I would be surprised if MB does.

Check this forum you will find a lot of folks that reference the warranties provided by Michael. I do not know the guy, just used this forums advice. I am not saying do not buy the MB warranty. Do your homework and make your own choices. I am just a very satisfied customer that will probably buy an extended warranty for my GL450 and ML350 from the same guy.

BTW MB wanted to charge me $500 for 16 spark plugs. I bought the very same 16 Bosch FR8DPP33's for $100. Makes you think doesn't it.....

Here is Michael's information.

I'm interested in getting a warranty, but not sure I can given the age of my SL55... it's an 04 model (manufactured 12/2003) and has 46,000 miles on it.

I'd like to get 4 or 5 years of coverage, and I'll probably do 10K/12K miles a year.

I'll call him to see what he suggests. Thanks!

Definitely call a bunch of dealers. I called 4 dealers and the price ranges were huge for the exact same warrantly. Every single dealer said they were doing it at cost. From $2400 - $4000 for 48 months, 48k miles, I took the $2400 one.
