SL500.....AMG vs Sports Package

ok....so I'm looking to buy a 2004-2006 SL500.....now through my search ive noticed a few things-some claim that they have the sports package-is that the same as the AMG package-because i notice a few have the AMG badge on the back and some dont.....I really want an SL500 AMG....but i dont just want it to have a badge put on it-i want the actual package if it IS differant.....Thanks

A badge on an SL500 does not make it an AMG. Some people enjoy the look of AMG wheels, lights, body kits, etc. on a non-AMG car. But a badge is just to impress others. A true AMG is about the larger, more powerful engine and suspension and brakes differences. So, if your goal is to show off to others, save your money, buy an non-AMG vehicle and a badge from E-bay.

To answer your question. My car is a "Sport" it looks almost like a SL55 AMG. It has AMG bumpers, wheels, etc. Some people like to call the "Sport" an AMG package. Other people put AMG badges on sport to fool people. But unless its a SL55 or better its not an AMG car.

Here are a couple photos of my car for comparison.

i think i'll just play it safe and go for an SL55---this should be fun convincing my dad that its safe enough lol-sl500 got approved lol-after the cls63 was shot down for being to powerful.....i think i'll go with the--"it has a smaller engine than ur s550, and the supercharger is good for gas mileage"---worst part is.....im the one paying for it anyways-lol-wish me luck

Yes the sport package is a factory item.

Good luck with the car hunt.

There is no such thing as an SL500 AMG - as everyone has said, these have proliferated since the rise of ebay.

AMGs will only have a two numeric digit combination following the model designation - 73 (very few ever made, it is used only by Pagini now), 65, 63, 60, 55, 43, 36, and 32. (The latter arguably the best of them all, but it embarrassed the 55 by being too close to it in power output. As the 55 is really made for the US market, and the V6 was never destined for the US, it lost out and put back on the shelf). The only variances to these were the older 560SEL-AMG and the 'Hammer 330E which were pre Mercedes owning AMG.

Technically the only really 'true' AMG engine is the 63 using the AMG designed M156 engine, whereas the others are 'mildly' tuned Mercedes engines.

The engine in your 55 is not smaller than your S550, but you can try! Good luck on the hunt. Try and get one with a warranty - they are a pig when they go wrong!

I agree with everything you said except the 'true AMG' part. The 55, my favorite engine, is more than mildly tuned. 514hp is not mild in my book.

LOL, you may want to get your sarcasm meter checked, I think he wasn't being entirely serious. All those AMG tuned engines based on standard MB engines have some serious power increases over stock. Especially that 3.2L supercharged one... that damn thing made 215hp stock and went up to 349hp (and good torque to match) with the supercharger mod! "I'll take a six-pack of whatever he's having, thanks!"

Although the 6.2L engine is an almost wholly new AMG engine, it is a tiny bit based on the 5.5L which is based on the 5.0L. Although the 5.5L was a bored and stroked 5.0L, it basically became its own engine as the AMG arm of MB made their own block castings and engine parts to get the power close to and over 500hp.

One thing I don't understand about the new "6.3" engine though is why AMG decided to do a "revvy" engine rather than a pig-iron torque monster like all their previous engines. The damn thing has a 7200rpm redline for pete's sake!
