no. the button on the top of the gear shift knob is literally just that, a button and it connects via 2 wires that run down the shift lever. once the knob is all the way down the button will work.
what message do you get when you press the button? does it ask for the chipcard. 2003 and some 2004 models used a chipcard for KG and they always forget to give those with the car when they sell it. if you need new KG keys or cards then you do need to get those programmed by the dealer.
yea its a 03, and i heard that you need a card with the key to start that of the button, do i still need to hook up the wires inside the gear shift ?
ill just take it to mb and see what they tell me.
thanks man!
You can use either the key or the card. I only use the card, but you'd need that button replaced. Its no 'magic' button, just makes a connection like turning the key does, basically brings two wires together. Remember, with the card, you MUST press the brake to start. Otherwise, it just turns on the accessories (like position 1 using the key).
However, be careful. These cards are a pain...if you put them close to another card, cellphone, or even a Credit Card, it can disable them.
Oh, and they are EXPENSIVE...

Darned, I cannot believe it! Having shipped my CLK500 without gear stick from the US to Europe I am confronted with exactly the same problem.
Keyless unlocking works, the key is detected inside the car and can be used to start the engine etc., but the start/stop button on the shift knob is dead.
I realized that the button kind of works once when sliding the knob onto the shifter - either the ignition is turned on or the engine started during the sliding movement. After that the button plays dead again and doesn't do anything at all.
SL 55 AMG, what was the solution for you in the end?
Or is there anybody else out there who can save me from visiting the dealer (which I'll have to do anyway to remove the speed limit, adjust the frequency steps of the MCSII comand radio to European standard etc.)? Your help is appreciated.
I suggest you have an M-B tech remove, inspect, and repair/replace your KG gear shifter.
It's a pretty simple and quick process to remove and install, so the cost should be reasonable.
OTOH, if it's determined that you need a new KG gear shifter/knob, then I have another suggestion:
The following M-Bz item was expertly and carefully removed from my ’06 SL500 (when 1 month old/650 mi), and is now For Sale:
Factory Original Keyless Go Shift Knob (w/leather boot): Part # 230 267 6410 9B97; MSRP = $380
I strongly doubt that there is a problem with the shift know. In the meantime I managed to involuntarily disable the keyless locking and unlocking of the doors by disconnecting the main battery for a couple of minutes.
So, I am quite convinced that there is some certain procedure to follow when removing/reinstalling the shift knob and main battery and an initialization of the keys is apparently needed as well. I'll try a few more days until I will finally get my license plates so I can drive to the next knowledgeable MB dealer.
