I have just purchased a 2003 SL500 in California. I am aware I can bring it into Canada as I have recieved a letter from MB Canada, however, they have warned me of major modifications.
Can anyone shed some light as to what is required and what the cost will be?
Hi
I just did this with a 2005 sl55, you have to replace the instrument cluster, rear bumper support, 2 front bumper rub strips and the keyless go shifter if its an assessory your car has. I got quotes in Newfoundland to Toronto on completing the mod and it ranged from 5,300 to 7,000 plus tax.
Duty is 6.1 percent.
MB Canada Charges a 500 inspection fee
RIV Charges a 206.00 application fee.
So the total cost depends on the cost of your car because of duty, if you have a bill of sale customs will base the duty on that cost, if you do not, they use some sort market average, what ever that is. After inspection you get the remaining warranty transfered into Canada.
Therefor 10 to 12 is about right.
The most ridiculous change is the Keyless go shift handle, because it says start and stop rather than the international symbols. If you can't read start to get the car going, I guess your not going to have to use stop.
Did it all work out for you Hilton? So is it possible to have the conversion done by the US Mercedes dealer? I was told it has to be done by the Canadian dealer. My local dealer is not too thrill in doing the work and dragging their feet in giving me a quote.
I am looking for a 2004 or 2003 SL55 or may be a very clean SL500.
Anyone has experience with CARCHEK? I am mostly looking for a star certified vehicle from the US Mercedes dealers because I think it should be quite reliable. (all the star certified vehicles in my local dealer are very clean and in excellent shape) However, I have found a SL55 from an non-Mercedes dealer but I don't know whether they are reliable. I will not be able to fly out there to check the car myself. Is it worth it to pay slightly more for a star certified vehicle especially if I can't go to inspect the car?
I am thinking of using A&A custom broker service to help me ship the car to Canada.

Thank You.
Mercedes Benz Canada will provide you with an exact list of required modifications - The work has to be done by an authorized MB dealer in Canada. The regional Mercedes Benz rep will then have to inspect it, check the actual invoices for the parts bought and work performed - and report to MB in Toronto. You also have to go to Canadian Tire to have the car inspected again. The conversion on my 2001 CL500 cost approx. $5,000. This was about one year ago.
I understand you now have to pay MB Canada to find out if the model is admissable, what modifications are required - if any - You then go to an authorized dealer to get the cost estimate - the dealer is permitted to charge for this estimate.
I suggest a telephone call to Mercedes Benz Canada in Toronto to get the latest rules on the importation from the US.
There are several cars sitting in Sweetrass, Montana - The purchasers are now finding out that the cars are inadmissable - and they have to sell them back in the US.
Enjoy your SL - before the snow falls -
There is no doubt that Mercedes Canada is not interested in owners importing these cars, I bought mine in May, it's now end of September and I still do not have all the work done to make it Canadian compatible. Luckly I have a D plate so I have been driving the car all summer, but they are not making it easy. With the dollar at par there will only be more vehicles coming into Canada.
