My 2003 SL55 has the integrated Motorola V60 phone. This phone is worth maybe $60 but the price from Benz because of the interface to the car is nearly $600.
My V60i is a TDMA model that is already showings its age.
The design is stupid. The electronics to tie the car to the phone shouldn't be in the phone itself. I've heard than in Europe there is a interface called UHI (from Motorola) which allows the use of any UHI (Bluetooth?) compatible phone.
Any idea when this will come to the USA, and, will it be possible to retrofit to 03 models?
According to my sale's person at the Nashville Mercedes dealer, the blue tooth technology will not be out for a while because of security. I had to wait for the new Mercedes phone that will be out in July 2004, because I could not purchase a new plan on TDMA or CDMA analog technology in my area. All the carriers only offer GSM technology on new cell plans in my area. Also tel-aid for the 2005 SL500 will be using GSM technology. GSM is digital technology. The Mercedes cell phone and kit is about $1995. The best thing about this new phone is that you can go to any carrier by giving the ESM number on the phone. In the past you had to purchase an adapter for the carrier you will be using.
The UHI is already available in Europe. Is this what your dealer is referring to? Do they have any knowledge on whether or not it can be retrofit to 2003's?
The Chrysler side of Damiler-Chrysler is already offering bluetooth phone technology. It's for sale right now.

I spoke to Mercedes today and the new phone will be out in September. If you have Cingular, the phone from Mercedes will be a Motorola V600. I do not know if the phone can work with the existing integrated phone/car kit. The new integrated car/phone kit with Mercedes V600 phone will cost about $1,995.
