Has anyone had success with any aftermarket solutions which attach to the original Comand system and incorporate using an Iphone with on screen display and steering wheel/panel controls?
Great question. I don't have the comand setup, just the base version. Just picked up my 350 about a month ago, and am looking for the exact functionality you describe. When I find a suitable solution, I'll post my findings. You do the same?
I had to replace my wife's original unit in Her SLK, think I put in a Kenwood similar to the one shown below. Got it from the local stereo shop in Dallas called Car Toys. I has TONS of features, touch screen, HD radio, Satellite, GPS, back up camera, you can use you phone thought it - hands free, play tune off your phone.... all kinds of stuff she will never use. Of course the installer jacked things up to start with, the remote door locks did not work when we got it back. It seems the signal for the door locks comes through the radio antenna and they did not hook it back up. I fixed that, remote door locks work now. We did not use the MB amp, by passed it, kept the original Harman Kardon speakers, sounds fine. And the steering wheel controls don't work, but heck, the unit is just a few inches away from the steering wheel, not a problem to reach. The steering wheel controls are the only thing I was a bit disappointed in but if I can give that up. I hear that MB is the only make that has difficulty in converting the steering wheel controls to an aftermarket unit. Practically no MB Models convert. Overall, great unit. I can get more details and some actual pics when I get home from work if you are interested. I has been several years since we put this unit in and they have probably come up with "new and improved" units by now. But it works fine and looks GREAT!
I got a Pioneer unit from Crutchfield with all the features you described, including steering wheel controls, no problem. You can even program the steering wheel controls to do different things. It did require an additional adapter set led with the unit for that.
I've always thought it was a dumb idea that a handful of car manufacturers have, where they place the steering wheel controls for the radio on the right side of the steering wheel, almost exactly where the radio know already are. If anything your control on the steering wheel for the radio should be on the left where most people's driving hand is anyway. Most manufacturers do it that way from what I've seen and it makes so much more sense.
I have a 2005 that had the comand HK speakers & amp which I replaced with a Pioneer NEX8000 HU with BU camera. I kept the HK speakers and utilized the HK amp located in the foot well. I routed mic & camera wires through the car to the head unit. I get no errors & everything works well. Attached is the link.
