Oil Leak easy fix

I noticed that there was oil leaking down as I pulled my car out of the garage. I traced the oil leak to this round plastic piece on the driver side, topside, below the valve cover (see pics). I simply pry the piece out with a flathead and took it to my local MB dealer. They had the part available same day. Per the parts guy, this part apparently fails frequently so he told me not to be surprised if in a year, it starts to leak again. I installed the new part and no more leak.

I don't know what the part is for but here is the part #

000-998-56-90 EXPANSI F60F $6.56

Anyone know what this part is for?

Its name in EPC is expansion plug on vacuum pump--epc contains footnote "see DTB S-B-01.30/23a regarding seepage from back of cylinder head."

EPC states "no longer applicable," which must mean later models don't use it.

In any event, I'd visit service department to get a chance to read the dtb, as if you're still under warranty they will for free apply the specified fix--which could be more than just replace this part. If not under warranty, you'd have to pay but it would still be nice to know the full details of the problem.

dtb=dealer technical bulletin
