I realise that this topic has been discussed extensively already, but I'm having a nightmare! Also a complete newbie to this - though have been reading through these forums for a while.
I ordered my dream car (or so I thought) back in 2006. For the first year it was an absolute joy, had only been back in to dealership for new SRS sensors and and sticky triangular window on passenger side - both of which were dealt with under the warranty swiftly.
When the car was about 1 year old the roof seals started creaking (coincided with spring and the weather warming up). Dealership again sorted it by lubricating the seals with silicone. This lasted about a month and it all started up again, now worse. Again dealer lubricated the seals and I think the car was going in every month for this - a complete pain! Then there was a rattle from the boot - after many attempts they fixed this - the stopper alignment problem which has been discussed here.
As the roof creaking continued, they re-sealed the whole car to return it to me worse than when it went in. Now there was a knocking from the front end of the roof, where it closes onto windscreen. Back in again, and took them a week of replacing parts on a trial and error basis to solve this one. It's been back to me for 1 week and now there is a new "tearing" type noise from the roof again.
Been on to the manager in the dealer today and I complained bitterly at their poor attmpts to solve the problems. He suggested replacing the whole roof system! I'm very wary of this as I am aware that the more they do to the car the more problems they are likely to cause.
I've well and truly had enough. I want to sell the car, but love it too much to do so. One minute I'm convinced and half way to BMW dealership for a 3-series coupe (not a convertible again!) and the next I change my mind. I'm also worried that when the warranty runs out in 10 months time I'm going to be paying for all these attempted repairs.
I know this is a bit of a moaning thread, but was wondering if anyone had any advice? Should I let them replace the whole roof system? Anyone else having similar issues?
Whew! Sounds like you've really been put through the wringer on this one. I'm with you as far as being just a little afraid about replacing the entire system. Like you mentioned, replacing things here and there on a car often results in more problems than you started with. With an ENTIRE roof replacement, however, perhaps you minimize the potential problems by getting all new components installed at one time. Just a guess. I wish you luck. Definitely have it done before the warranty lapses.
Can't offer much on this sorry but will say that I make sure the dealers fix the bits I want even with repeat visits (And my car has been back too many times to count in the last 9 months - nothing too major, couple of aircon failures and seat electrics failing)
Other than wanting a fully working car this is in hope the cost of all the repairs will make MB hurry up and get back to building top notch reliable cars not ones that are prone to problems here and there.
Must be costing them a fortune in warranty claims....and oh yeah if you do keep the car think about extending the warranty
