It's been 6 weeks since I purchased a very slightly used 2006 SLK350. While it's been raining non-stop, it's still a blast to drive with the top up. I'm looking forward to the summer.
In Oregon, it's mandatory to have a front license plate. The dealer, thankfully, offered to put my front license plate in the trunk instead of drilling the bumper.
I found an excellent aftermarket solution which works great and is very reasonably priced. You can find it at the website GoMiniGo-Home of Innovative Products for your car - Home. Dave Royce did a great job of getting the perfect fit for my car and I'm sure can do the same for anyone else who needs/wants this service.
Anyway, as a newbie, I thought there might be others out there that need this service and thought I'd let you all know.
Thanks for the suggestion, but I think I'll pass. I'm one of those guys who likes everything "centered" or aesthetically balanced and this solution doesn't do it for me. I'd rather have the plate centered or go without. There's also a fine in Washington state, but I think it's only a $10.00 "reminder" infraction, so you see tons of people driving around without their front plate. Maybe you could post a pic of your car on this forum to see what others think.
OK, We all agree that the SLK looks better without the front plate but the hassle wasn't worth it to me. I drilled holes in my front bumper (carefull to center the mounting) and I installed the plate. I ignore it and just drive. In the Chicago area, writing tickets is a nice source of income for the political macine. The cops are always looking for ways to fill their quotas.
JTW69 - thanks for the link. I've just ordered one. I got a ticket (while parked in SF) for not having the front license plate, and the ticket is $100 or $10-corrected. Instead of paying $100, I thought perhaps it's better to pay $60 for the GoMiniGo. I'll install it, get a police officer to sign off, and then remove it without a trace on my bumper.
I posted this to the benzworld galleries a few years ago. Not sure if this is the same material that cyberdrakon is referring to in his post. I uses 3M Dual Lock VHB (Very High Bond)
This is what i did with my front plate bracket so i can put it on and off as i like, securely, with no marks.
I cut apart some 3M command Hooks and glued the hooks onto the back of the bracket, and then used the tape thingy that comes with it to tape it to my bumper. I ran heavy weather insulation around the top where the bracket normally contacts the bumper so it wouldn't scuff. See pictures. if you want to do this, remember to keep all the hooks aligned, this way you can still unclip it.
This should be readily apparent if you have ever used these hooks before, but feel free to post any questions.
