We received about 3 inches of snow yesterday here in DC. My drive home last evening was a little bit scary to say the least. The high-performance tires were pretty useless. I do not have a garage to store an extra set of tires so winter tires do not make sense. I was researching all season tires on tirerack.com last night. I know I would give up some handling by switching to all-seasons. However, it would probably be the most practical.
Has anyone else gone with all season tires on their SLK? If so, could you comment on how you like them compared to the std tires?
Check with your dealer. Some dealers will store your extra set of tires for free or for a minimum charge because they get to charge you for remounting them in Spring.
I work in DC and live in Virgina and my SLK 280 is my daily driver. Drove home in the snow we got yesterday evening without any problem. I switched my wheels to 17" and the tires to Pirelli PZero Neros all season ones over 15 months ago. Can't complain about their performance in summer or winter. Of course, I also learned to drive in the 1960s when we used to get a ton of snow and all cars were rear wheel drive so your experience may be different.
I believe that if you drive carefully (conservatively) during the winter, you can drive safely even with the stock tires. In all situations, easy does it. I drove a 1969 Dodge Charger R/T with the 440 CID magnum engine in winter. I can't imagine any M/B being that bad in the snow.
Thanks for the responses. I learned to drive in Ohio so the snow usually doesn't bother me. We always looked at driving in the snow as a challenge! However, the lack of control with these Michelin Primacys the other night was unsettling. I will look into all-seasons
