Correct me if I'm wrong... Isn't MB testing the flashing lights with some of their vehicles? I thought I read that somewhere. IIRC, the lights would simply illuminate under normal braking. Under hard braking, the lights would instead flash. Sounds like a good thing.
It is true, they are testing this as a new feature. However by the time it get to the R171-class, i assume it would be a while. So i decided to jump ahead of the crowd and come up with something that can be added to ANY benz, New or Old, of Any model (even those that don't have LED 3rd break lights)
working on the wiring now, so final module and connections are just around the corner.

No Regrets!
My peeve with the tailight cluster is that many manufacturers are now making the turning indicators in red - which means when you both turn and brake, it's not 100% to the car behind you what exactly is going on - just a blur of red, some flashing, some static. I think this is crazy - using amber (as on the SLK) just seems so much smarter to distinguish between a turn signal and the brake light.
At one point only the US car cos. did this, but now I see BMW, Nissan, Honda all follow suit.
I agree with tankman, amber is the clear choice for blinkers. At one point i was very interested in installing white led blinkers, then noticed how horrible they look during the day. Could hardly see anything. So i stick with the amber now.
Red is popular with many auto makers, but i am not a fan at all. Like you said, hard to tell what is going on turning or braking...
I guess even more reason to get a center brake light flasher
There was an American made car (think maybe a Mercury??) back in the 90's that went even further. The brake lights were all across the trunk. The harder you braked the more of them turned on (don't remember for sure, whether there was some flashing involved too).
The theory was for a panic brake, people behind you would see A LOT of red light, but for just a tap, they would see the normal amount.
As far as I know, that was the only car that it was tried on. Didn't stay in, for the next body style update of that model.
I would love to have in interface with the actual braking system of the car, however i feel that may be a complex job in terms of both developement and price. Though not ruling it out... may look into it once i get the V1.0 model rolling out. -Perhaps a future upgrade to look into
