I was told there was not a way to retrofit command to the car after the factory. I had a 2005 with Audio 20 that I wanted to adapt for the ipod kit. After several months, I sucessfully argued to have my car swaped out for a 2006 with command. It helped that my car was produced in Dec 2004 when the bad engines came out.

There are firms in the UK that will retro fit comand, cost is similar to the cost when ordering from new, see link, there must be the same sort of facility in the USA.
Looks like Britian has it over the USA on this one.
In America, it is shaping up that no Mercedes-Benz dealer will install the COMAND head unit. This must be ordered and installed by the factory in Germany.
NOTE: REALLY WISH MERCEDES-BENZ WOULD TAKE 3 SECONDS AND MENTION THIS FACT IN ALL OF THEIR NORTH AMERICAN MARKETING MATERIAL (BROCHURES, WEBSITE, ETC.) FOR THE SLK.
The British appear to know more about these things and thus are able to affect the change.
Guess I'll be living with the standard head unit unless something else happens to occur.
