Can any UK owners please advise what the changes are on MY07 cars? My MB stealer is quite clueless but does think that the paddles are now standard across the range.
How often do the slk55 owners actually use the buttons? I'm told that shifting in "S" mode is much faster. True? If true, why go manual?
I use them a few times a week. As to 'S' mode being faster, I don't see how. There can be a momentary delay when changing up or down (but often it's immediate) but that doesn't make the shift slower than 'S' mode. How do you know when the gearbox decided to shift when it changes in 'S' mode? Chances are the same delays apply. I find 'S' mode better for making the fastest progress, but manual mode can be more involving. So they complement each other. 'C' mode changes up much earlier and is less frantic. It's a great gearbox IMO because it offers the three alternatives.

I definately think 'S' mode is faster. Let me clarify. Although 'M' probably changes gears as fast as 'S' mode, the .5 sec delay between driver input and gearbox change is the problem. Therefore, I still believe 'S' mode is faster although a bit less involving.
Oh, I wish there was a way to use 'M' mode but start off in 2nd gear. I find 1st gear too short unless you're racing.

If they're able to install them there, I'm pretty sure someone knowledgeable who is able to remove the steering wheel, is also able to do it themselves...
But do you want to risk this? I'm not sure I'd trust most dealers into doing such a change.

I have the aluminium shift paddels on order from a company that deals directly with AMG. Racing arm I should have them in my hands in about three weeks. The cost will be incl. shipping 720.00 Euros.
They should work with no problems. If you look very close on your 2006 55 as mine you will see there actually is a outline where to remove the material. The cutout is the size of the paddle shifters. However all systems after this modification will not work. You will have to completely synconice all systems,seats...windows ...mirrors ect. and have the air bag reset by MB. If you are not familiar with this type of install i would highly recomend you would let a benz dealer do it for you. I may be able to order the shift paddls for you when i get more info and details. HOWEVER if you lease the car- NO ,otherwise we will need serial numbers and options.
I have a 07 SLK55 and the shift paddle broke off in the first 1000km !
See pictures in reply #12 and then further down page , I took a picture of the part number.

hate the paddles - can't beleive they have changed from buttons. you want to be able to change up and down with one finger. having up and down on different hands is crazy - think roundabouts
