RE: Scratched... Now what?

Oooh. Bloflin. Don't even mention it! [:0] That's a sore subject around our house. My wife managed to go a little over a year before her first bout of "curb rash" on her Lexus wheels. After that, she managed to hit two of the other wheels within a few weeks of each other, so now there's only one that isn't scraped. I told her that if she scrapes the SLK wheels, I'm going to use it as an excuse to buy a new set of 5-spoke wheels. So far, it's worked. No scrapes. [:D] If I cause the scrape, I guess I should also buy a new set of 5-spokes. LOL.

Wonder how long it takes the average person to get that first scrape on their wheels? I've seen some older cars that don't have any - probably because they don't parallel park. I'm guessing that Julien's wheels are probably flawless. [;)]

Just wait until you or Beleriand get your first "rim rash" on your wheels, much more visible, really hurts! [}:)]
So is saying "get a dent" or "scrape your wheels" to a car enthusiast like a performer saying "break a leg" to another? hehe For myself, I dare not tempt fate. [:)] *knock on wood trim*

Well, I suppose if were really anal about it, we could just have our cars towed on a flatbed truck everywhere... but what would be the fun in that? [;)]

Hey Bill - You're right. It wouldn't be any fun. [V] I have a neighbor who rarely drives his BMW, but loves to cart it to shows in his custom, padded trailer. The car looks fabulous, but what a waste, leaving it in the garage for the majority of the year. [xx(]

A very good friend of mine bought a 350Z Roadster in June. He, like me, also has a moderate case of OCD. We all know that Julien has turned the art of cleaning his car into a masterful work of science and beauty. Multiply that by 3 and that's my friend. One day though, a nail found its way into the back right tire, so he went to the local Firestone shop to get it patched or plugged. They do so and give him an added bonus, scuff marks on his immaculate wheel. I don't think I can accurate describe the color of red in face other than "Chuck Norris red once his family was killed by Ninja's." Of course the tire place said "we didn't do that, our tools won't make those marks." Funny thing about service guys who lie (this doesn't always work with managers), they hate eye contact. Stare at them long enough and they'll crack, sure enough he did and offered to re-finish the wheel. After much debate my friend simply said "why don't you get your manager and order a new wheel." Sure enough that worked, about 3 weeks later he had a new wheel. The moral of the story is....uhm...ahh...most service places are crooks [?][:D]

I looked at it again today with a little less emotion. I can only see the scratches while kneeling or when stepping 15+ feet away. I asked my wife to look over my car and see if she found 'what was wrong.' She didn't notice it until I pointed it out. Therefore, I won't put lots of time and money into it... at least not yet. I will lower the car and see what happens. Like Bloflin mentioned, I would hate to have it professinally painted now only to scratch it again in 2 weeks.

On the plus side... The first scratch is always the most painful. Now that it's happened, I can move on.
Good, don't do anything, it's already scatched so just move on, sorry to said this but since you are lowering your SLK and possibly getting the Kleeman lip, many many more scatches to come. Every 2-3 years you can get it repainted, too bad you are not here in Colorado, I know a guy here that does a great job for a known body shop and he usually paint it on the side for 150-200 bucks. I pretty much name my price. Every time I come in, he would ask me "how much to get it painted?", I give him a reasonable price and he accepts it. It never fails. [:D]

Another moral of the story is, never to take your car to a chain tire outlets like Firestone, discount, Big-O, it's not their fault, even if they are extremely careful with your wheels they will scuff it up, it is their tools that scatch it, take it to a specialize wheel shop. I paid double to have mine tires mounted and balance but it's worth it.

The chuck norris part is hilarious. lol... good thing they replace your friend's wheels, sometimes they don't admit to it even though they know their equipment sucks and causes scuff marks.

I agree 100%. I've had the same problem with Costco. They have great prices on their tires, but the savings are wiped out when they nick your wheels. In the past, I asked them if they felt comfortable mounting wheels that cost $1K to $2K each and they told me "no problem." When I had tires replaced on one of my beater cars, they nicked a couple of wheels. Enough said. The extra cost of going to a shop that deals in high-performance vehicles is worth it. That's not to say that they won't nick your wheels on a bad day, but I think the odds are less. [;)]

RE: Scratched... Now what?

I keep my bow in the maximum raised position. But, that is not always enough so I usually stop well before the tire block.

In Bangkok it is not much of a problem because everyone backs into a parking space.

Hey Corkscrew - Just curious. What did you mean by this statement? [?]
