When I ordered my 2006 SLK 350 the salesman suggested we discuss my purchasing an extended warranty when I pickup the car. Well the car has been built and is awaiting shipment to the US...expected to arrive at the dealer late Feb / early March.
So I was wondering if anyone on the forum has purchased and/or has an opinion about an extended warranty for an SLK. Is the warranty backed by MSUSA or is it simply an insurance policy sold by the dealer?
I didn't on my 350. It was one of those first oil consumption cars. They bought it back. Then I got the 55. Needless to say, I got the 7/100 warranty for $3200. Although, I do follow the proper break-in procedure, I drive my car a little hard afterwards. This includes occassional track days. I normally don't get warranties on a car. I have two Toyotas at home, a Highlander and a Camry for work. Those things last forever. Therefore, I didn't get the warranty. On the MB, I think it makes sense because a)they aren't the most reliable cars on the planet, b)their more costly to repair than a Toyota, and c)the problems I had with the 350.
BTW, I am not trying to scare you regarding the 350. I believe they remedied the oil issues. However, you did ask for opinions.

My dealer wanted ~3K for an extended warranty... never had one before, but just had a disasterous experiance with my old BMW325 (7 Windows Acuators, Sunroof, Instrument Cluster etc.....).... So when I got my SLK350, I researched it a bit and went with http://www.autowarrantydirect.com/ which is recomended by Edmunds.... I got Bumper2Bumper extended to 60K MI / 6 Years for ~$1400 (half of what the dealer wanted).... they say they will pay for repairs done by the dealer.... ask me in 4 years if there are loop holes [:)]
Dealer never once offered me one. I kept waiting for the sales pitch and they never offered. I do want to purchase one because at this rate my 50k mile warranty will expire in 2 years driving. I do 25k a year.
