Directional air flow

I've had my SLK for six months now, and no problems, but I noticed that air never comes out of the stationary vents and air always comes out of the the two middle vents regardless of which vents I select.

This is most annoying when I just want air at my feet and air still comes out of the two middle vents.

Is this normal? Or should I take in the car?

Thanks in advance for your response!

Patches

The circular switch on the right.............

the companion to the fan switch, directs the air flow in various combinations between the floor, center and windshield vents.
Also the slide on the center vents directs the air to the stationary vents on the side.
There is a pretty good explaination in the owners mamual.

RE: Directional air flow

What the heck are those vents on either side of the main console? Not the ones that are blocked by the insane cup holder. The ones outside that? Are they intakes?

RE: Directional air flow

There's a great resource for a lot of the above questions... it's called "The Manual"...

Starting on page 178 there are diagrams of all of the vents along with descriptions of the controls and arrows showing airflow through each vent. As quoted at the bottom of page 182 the footwell position "directs air to the footwells and through the center and side air vents". Thus there is no setting that will direct air onto the feet while bypassing the face-level vents.

Yes the manual does talk about those vents but I have to admit, the manual is full of ****. I can not get any air out of those two vents regardless of what position the selector is in or what position the dial above the center console is set to. I have mounted my XM Radio onto one of these vents because no air comes through them anyways...

You should find that with A/C on, the centre vents blow colder than the rest to stop you falling asleep if you haven't any coffee in your cupholders....

My service technician told me that 2006 owners still have a 2005 manual (in my French version, there is no mention of the MY). He said it takes almost an entire year for the new updated version to be issued. That's why my manual still explains some features that are no longer available for 2006 (i.e. seat moving back for easy entry). Besides, I have read the manual many many times and my car doen't always behave the way the manual says it will. Maybe my car hasn't read the bloody manual. [:o)]

Would that be the Coffeetronic detecting the presence of the coffee??

If you are talking about the two (one each side of the console) "half moon" shaped A/C vents, they are controlled by the vent control knobs by the horizontal A/V vents on the console. If you have either of those vent control knobs turned all the way, the air only comes out of that side's horizontal vent. You need to roll it back to the next detent, which will then cause the air to be shared between the "half moon" stationary vent and the horizontal vent (one each side). Pg 174 in the 2005 manual.

Can't speak for Canada (do you all have a different version?), but your tech is incorrect in that MB DOES update the manuals.

You can go to Bill's Den to get both the '05 and the '06 Manuals. They are different.
