OT - Mercedes Benz of Carlisle Ride and Drive

A couple of weekends ago my local dealership had a ride and drive day, where you could go along for a couple of hours and test drive any car from the MB range (sadly not including an SL, SLR, or SLK AMG [:(])

Now the invite was actually for my Mom, which kinda makes me laugh cause she bought a second hand black C Class Coupe in the spring from the Dundee dealership (cause the Carlisle Sales Rep never came back with a price (we're still waiting!!! [:0])), but I think Carlisle still have her down as having an A Class which would be 4 years old [;)]

Anyway along I went for a bit of a laugh. I had hoped that they might have had an SL as I am keen to have a drive in one of these, but no such luck, and the only SLK's were the 200 and the 280 so wasn't really fussed about either of them.

So first choice was the M Class 350, automatic, petrol engine. And boy can this car motor!!!!! I hadn't realised how used I'd got to my sports suspension till I drove this, as I found the ride a bit "floaty"!! [^] But aside from that, really impressed with this. Good handling, great accrelation, and had paddle shifters for the gearbox - which I had fun with to begin as I tried to figure out how it worked!!!

So after a 40 minute drive, back to swop for my second choice - the B Class, which I always tend to think of as the Bling class cause the only two B Class's I've seen both had the full chrome accessories and just make me laugh. [8D] I really was impressed with it. I've driven an A class quite a number of times and have never felt a 100% comfortable in it, but this little beauty is great. [:D] Smooth ride, again quick and nimble - really impressed. I think this could possibly be the car I will purchase when I grow-up [:o)]

Even though there was no SLR to drive, they did have one on display [:D] [8D] [:X] [}:)] [:p] WOW!!
An unbelievable piece of engineering, and they were more than happy to knock the engine on for me and I got the chance to sit in it and rev the engine!!! [}:)] I managed to scare the cr@p out of some little lad when I did - he jumped a good couple of foot!! [}:)] What was even more sickening was the fact that one of the sales rep's got to drive the SLR - jammy so and so [:(!]

Now the good bit, photos!! [:D]

The fit and finish inside the SLR engine bay is simply astounding. You do figure out eventually where all those extra kilos went to... so much padding and stuff. But my god, a dream come true in all aspects [:D]

I must admit I was a bit disappointed when the hood was lifted, cause I was expecting something impressive under it and it's just soo none descript. [:I]

I thought it was really impressive because all tubing was well attached, covered in a flexible mesh wiring, etc... etc...

Just as well that the ride & drive wasn't in Manchester, someone would have nicked the SLR whilst they weren't looking....

I agree the details are astounding but close the hood and the SLR is a great car but somewhat under whelming for the big bucks. If you put 4 debadge cars (SLR, SLK 55, Ferrari 420, and Ford GT) together and ask the average person to identify the 2 cars under $150,000, or 2 sexiest, or 2 most exotic, or 2 fastest looking. I bet 9 times out of 10 they will put the SLK and SLR together and the Ferrari and GT together. The SLR just doesn't' extrude exotic the way the Ferrari and GT do.

I don't say the contrary, I did mention that there's a lot of cushioning material in there that ends up adding weight. Definitely too much for some people's taste.

Julien: true... true...
