That is particularly nice when you rent a car and don't know which side it's on. We have two Japanese cars, filler on the left side and the SLK with it on the right side. I still forget once in awhile.
Agreed, it's a nice, simple touch. Why couldn't they have also put a simple green indicator amongst the tacho / speedo lights to show dipped lights are on.
It's taken many years of MB ownership to notice that that there is an arrow next to the fuel gauge to let you know what side the filler cap is [:0]
Just thought I'd share my discovery with everyone and maybe I'd enlighten someone else!! [:D]

Don't just about all cars have this. I know all the Fords I have owned do. Most also have the filler on the drivers side which seems more natural when pulling up to the pump.

Knowing what side it's on is one thing, knowing how to open the flap is another.
Short story....
First merc I drove was a CLK230 I'd hired in Germany for a couple of days (in 2000). Pulled into a little gas station in the Black Forest, got out, seen the flap and thought "..now how to open it...mmm...???"
No manual (would have been in German anyway), service station attendant couldn't understand what I needed (not her fault, obviously) so I spent the next 5 minutes looking for a button in the car, to no avail.
Finally pushed on the edge towards the front of the car, and hey presto, it opened!
No all things in life are as obvious as they could be, but the little surprises are worth it!
