As I was on my way to work this morning, all of a sudden a loud beep and a message came up saying something like "check oil level when next refueling". My car only has about 3100 miles. Is this something that I should be aware of by taking my car back to the dealership? Do anyone in here has a similar situation like I have that this message pops up with the car still under 5000 miles?
Thanks for all your help!
Do a search on this forum for oil consumption and read all the previous posts. many people have had their oil light come on under 5000 miles (mine initially came on at 2800) and many times thereafter.
Don't people check the oil when, for example, cleaning the car, with the bonnet (hood) up to clean under there. Seems second nature to me to check the oil and top up the washer bottle.

Nope. The car tells me when it wants feeding with oil and water [:D]
To be quite honest modern cars should not get through huge amounts of oil - unless you own one of the "dodgy" 350s that appear to be out there. The only MB cars I've ever had to put lots of oil in were the two diesels I've owned.
I have checked my current petrol guzzlers and they are not going through oil at all really. The only time I made an effort to actually check was after my last service on the 350. Even now I have not had to top it up.
It's a 05 SLK350. The car was built in November of '04. I just called MB and the service person told me that there might be several possibilities that the warning light came out. One of which is the oil sensor is malfunctioning. He said MB is aware of the problem and would suggest me bring the car in to perform an oil consumption test.
Thus the saga begins.... It all ends with MB denying that your car uses too much oil, or maybe that it isn't really using any oil at all, that you're just hallucinating like the rest of us suckers that by sheer dumb luck have winning tickets in the MB oil losers lottery. I'm on my second consumption test with somewhere between 6 and 8 quarts gone in 7080 miles. I wish I didn't like the car so much; it really is painful to hear this story again. We need to have a list of losers (oil) so that MB can view it and know that we are out there. Every time someone asks about my great looking car , I just tell them the oil story and ask if they'd like to buy a lemon.
