You can get one on eBay. I have been referring to it as the "0721" dipstick tool since those are the last few digits of the part number. I bought one for $39 and a second one for $29. The suppliers were El Paso Tool and Trinity Tool. I think you can get the tool from MB too for $100+ if you want to pay more than it's worth. The tool is intended for the E500 and E320 class engines. But it works in the SLK350 too. The problem is that it is difficult to get the official oil level in relation to the bottom of the oil pan unless you have access to MB's documentation or internal online service manual. In the SLK350 I think the correct level is about 150mm and in the E500 4matic it seems to be around 120mm.
But these numbers are based upon my own experience, not any official MB documentation.
Do a search for dipstick and you will find the thread where I described how to modify one of the tools to make it into a dipstick for the SLK350.

Fgwinn, do you have that dipstick tool? If so, where did you get it? Is it made specifically for the SLK55?

Q1: Did MB refuse to give you the official figures from their online servive manual? Would that info be specific to that dipstick (the "0721")?
Q2: Could you please give me the complete part number so that I can order one?
1. Dealer did not actually refuse to provide info. I don't think the technician understood what I was asking. He kept telling me that he could use the computer to determine the oil level and then check it with the tool, which he was holding in his hand. All I wanted him to do was to look up the value on a spec sheet for my engine.
2. Part number is 120 589 07 21 00
See this thread, post #6 from benzboyz. Note that the 113.967 engine has a target value of 148mm to 150mm. My E500 4-matic has engine 113.969 and the reading I get with 8 liters of oil is 120mm.
I have just under 500 miles on '06 SLK55.
I'll def. keep an eye out for any warnings from the car about oil consumption.
I don't drive the car hard (at least not all the time) and hopefully won't have to deal with much beyond the regularly scheduled maintenance from Mercedes Benz.

It is amazing at the difference between SLK's of the same year and oil comsumption. I have a 2005 SLK with 3700 miles and from what I can tell from checking the oil with the dipstick, it has not used a drop (or enough to tell).
Update on "Check oil level when next refueling..."
After leaving my car at the dealership for 2 days, I was finally able to get my car back for the "oil consumption" issue. What the service person told me was that after me putting a little over 3,000 miles on the car, it still hasn't been "breakin" yet. So they took my car to drive on the freeway (I believe) for 45 minutes with the range of 4,000 to 6,000 rpm in order to "breakin" the car. Then they rechecked the oil level. When I got my car back, I've noticed that my car had been driven for about 120 miles.
My question now is:
Has anyone heard of this before that someone (hopefully he's a service/tech person) drives your car for over 100 miles just to do the "breakin"? Honestly if I know this is what the problem is, I would do it myself. I just don't really trust other people that I don't know driving my car on the freeway for 45 minutes....
