According to some resources the audio 20 on R171 has the RDS feature( it can show you station/song names for the FM stations, like the satellite on COMAND), but mine doesn't do it.
Asked the dealer today and he( after checking it with ?) told me "it is not available on our cars"
No more info.
Anybody knows about that?
Friends out of the US: do you have that feature? Is it a matter of Stardiagnosis version-coding?

Eric,
The Audio 20 in my Australian specification R171 (prior to my COMAND upgrade) showed FM stations names (on those stations transmitting the information).
Thanks Jullian. My guess is that at least Europian and Australian R171s have that featue, too.
Also, I think it's a code-version issue and can be activated.

RDS allows only for the display and station name, not individual tracks and artists.
According to the Wikipedia entry for RDS (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Radio_Data_System), the "RT" (Radio Text) field in RDS data allows a station to transmit any free-form text information, which could be song title and artist information. However, it doesn't have to be supported by all implementations.

Not really. My other car is a recent model BMW with RDS. For a few stations in my area, you not only see the name of the station, but also information on both the song and artist. As someone else mentioned, the standard has provisions for additional text, which can be used for this purpose.
I find it very frustrating that R171s in other countries have COMAND enabled to use this, while it is not available here in the US. Wish I could understand MBZ's rationale here. Many stations in the US utilize RDS. <sigh>

I find it frustrating too, sometimes when you are listening to the radio and a good song comes on, it's nice to know the artist and the title of the song without having to call the rado station. Before you don't have to call because somebody else will call before you. But these days, it seems everybody has RDS on their cars so, you end up having to call yourself. My nissan has it, I think it's becoming standard on most cars.
