Well bloflin, I do have the HK system, and did not notice one bit of difference from the "ambient noise control" at any speed or on any pavement. Anyway, I am having theMB tech guy looking into it. The head tech guy at the local dealership does not know anything about Logic 7 or any "ambient noise control" on the HK system [:(]
If you can't tell "one bit of difference" then, by definition it is doing its job! [:D]
As far as "detecting" the automaticness of the volume control, I agree I'm not sure I can tell either.
With an ambient noise sensitive volume control, the only way you could tell, is if you can't tell the difference. That is the point, it handles it automatically to keep the same relative volume, regardless of the ambient noise.
My previous convertible had speed sensitive volume control and it was not a continuous adjustment, just at certain speed thresholds, and if I listen closely I COULD tell.
One thing you CAN tell is that the audio does some sort of change as you open or lower the top, as it actually mutes the sound for half a second, like it is switching to another mode. Not sure what that is about.
On your clueless tech, ask your service writer to get a technician that can take the 5 minutes to read his tech info on the cars he is working on, I guess.

... thats just power drain when the roof mechanism kicks in - it stops DVD, SatNag, radio, seat/mirror movement, or whatever other bits are doing their stuff when the roof starts to do it's bit.
Mercedes calls it "Digital Dynamic Volume Control" which according to the their literature "helps preserve the sound balance under all driving conditions." It's more sophisticated than just a speed dependent system. And I agree with the comment that if you can't hear it work, it is working as was intended.

Woolly, I went out and experimented with mine and don't believe that is correct.
Nothing else in my car blinks/droops/whines/ or stops when the top cycle goes. My seats don't stop moving either (if I was moving them)
The audio does, right at the begginning of the top down cycle, BUT at the END of the top up cycle, so I don't think its a power surge/drain due to motors/hydraulics. Also for top up cycle, the audio drop is after everything is finished except for the little back windows going up.
I know my other convertible with high end audio system, actually switched to a different "sound environment" setting with top down. I'm thinking the HK is doing similar.
I have a 350, with bog standard audio. I don't think I have 'ambient noise auto increase', but my normal (ok, when we have sunshine (ok, very infrequently[:(!] )) routine is
Get in the car,
Put the key in (at which time the COMAND display sparks up and the seat starts moving)
Start th engine (whilst the seat is still moving)
Hit the 'roof down' button
At this time, without fail, the seat stops moving for a time(2-3 seconds), concurrently the COMAND 'browns' out and the audio/video dies for a couple of seconds.
..perhaps, finally, I might have a fault on mine!!
Hmmm, there's not a sheep or two sleeping on the roof?[:D]
Here's what I did, held the seat forward move button and put the top up and down, with COMAND on. Nothing stops or burps, except the audio and it does the exact same kind of thing when you switch the sound function from Stereo to Logic7 (nothing to do with the roof).

-ok, you win - I've put the sheep back upstairs [:I][:I]- you're correct - when I get the brown out is when I start the engine, which is more understandable. If the engine is going, and I put the roof down (with bg standard COMAND and audio), nothing changes.
Ah, the latest news from the service advisor is that a) yes the volume control is not working as it should b) the foreman[sic] will have to figure out how to fix it. Wow, hold on there aren't you the biggest dealership in the state and purportedly selling more MB than anyone in this state, well that is according to your salesperson anyway, and don't quite know how to fix this? Sorry for the run on long sentence there [:)] They, however, believe that the squeaking and rattling problems are fixed, and have unstuck the center console. I am on my way to the dealership to check it out and will report back.
So is it supposed to kill everything for a sec when the top goes up and down? Mines does it. =\
I believe that is the norm. Well, I came back from the dealership with mix news. First, good news is that no more annoying squeaks and rattles. Second, the center console now opens and closes when it should. Last, the bad news, they have to hold the car until next week, it has been 4 days so far, and try to figure out how to fix the volume problem. They have put in over 40 miles "test driving"[sic] it. I hope they will figure out how to fix it before racking up any more mileage "test driving" my car[:(!]
