RE: Curious about one thing...

Soory to hear about the incident and pleased you are OK.

Reminds me of a wish that I have to protect the car, if there is such a thing. Covering many of the stunts mentioned above, I wish that a simple hidden 'prime' button could allow to 'break and make' something connected with the ignition circuit. To the thief who has the keys, nothing would happen till this hidden switch is set or reset. To the driver, a simple press of the swich could get you going. I realise that chopping through a selection of dashboard cables would be so unwise, but to the knowledgable, it could be done, yes? I suppose I am thinking of the Peugeot system of a key pad, but being a simpler hidden button. Is there a product out there? Of course if the car was stolen whilst the engine was running, my 'invention' would not work.

RE: Attempted Car Jacking

Perhaps MB could make available a 'flamethrower' device similar to the one you can order for BMWs in South Africa, where car jacking is a daily obstacle ( http://www.cnn.com/WORLD/africa/9812/11/flame.thrower.car/ ). The driver simply flicks a switch and a huge flame is emitted from the bottom of the car on both sides (and presumably, partially fries anyone standing alonside). I saw a video of one in action on a S.A. website, and it's mighty impressive.

RE: Attempted Car Jacking

Sounds tense, my key doesn't even come out when the car is in drive. Did he break it with just one quick pull?? or is yours different??

Its different with Manuals, turn the key and it pulls out, regardless of the gear you are in....

A hidden ignition kill switch will do the trick. I have one on my current car (SLK 55 coming in August). It cost $75 (parts and labor) to install and completely disables the starter circuit. Car jackers could take the car from you if it were still running, but as soon as they turned it off, they wouldn't be able to restart it without finding the switch.

How did you install the switch? How do you plan to do this for the SLK 55? I want to find the right circuit to do this and install a "start button" at the same time.

RE: Attempted Car Jacking

At least here in the USA we have an answer for them that wishes to car jack not available in your country. In the state I live in the law considers my house & car while in it my castle & am allowed to defend my castle with items not availble where you are. I am not knocking your country or laws just stating what our options are here.

I had the guy who put in the stereo do it. It's a simple toggle switch that interupts the starter circuit. Mine is hidden in an easy to get to, but completely out of sight spot. One can also get them hooked up so that they deactivate when you flip the position of any of the stalk switches (e.g. lights, turn signals, etc) X number of times, etc, or use the cigarette lighter, or any number of other things - google "ignition kill switch" and you'll find lots of ideas.

Btw, one can also buy a fuel kill switch. I wouldn't recommend this because if you forget it you might run with it enabled, which could damage your fuel injectors.

I do plan to do this with my SLK 55. I'll try to get my dealer to do it when the car gets delivered, otherwise I'll go to a car stereo guy and have him do it.

Sure does, you don't hear about too many carjackings & home breakins (unless drug related) here in Florida due to the good gun laws here in Florida. It really makes for a safer place to live. The laws are specific about where you can & can't carry & most are law abiding the ones you hear about most likey due not have a carry permit. Carry permit citizens are responsible people.
