Actually Osama is from Saudi Arabia where his family still lives. He then went to Afghanistan.
Car jackings are all too common where I live and having the windows up does not make much difference. They have been known to jump out of the car behind you and come in the back over the trunk. I also don't think you can single out any one race for being more prone to this type of behavior as here all races are involved at any given time. There are certain areas I will not drive in with the top down and will not drive at night with the top down in any area.
I live in a very safe neighborhood and yesterday a car full of teens stopped and asked an elderly neighbor for money while he was taking out his trash. When he refused they loudly cursed him and knocked him down and almost ran over him with the car. Not sure there is any "safe" place any more. Ah, for the days of my childhood....
If someone wants your car bad enough, I doubt the window would have stopped them. In fact, you probably saved from needing a window replacement.
Sorry to hear about the attempt. I probably would have reacted the same. I personally wouldn't carry a gun. I think it would only escalate the violence. However, this isn't the forum to discuss that, nor politics, nor race, etc.
In Arizona the "profession" of carjacker is a lot more hazardous. In the UK and CA (and some other states) it might be different. Please check your local laws.
Being car jacked must be absolutely frightening. Glad you got out of it relatively safely.
To add to sagey's list of precautions, I'd also recommend (to Americans, mostly) that they do as I do - always lock the car in the garage, and take the keys indoors. Because most garages have fairly flimsy side doors to the outside, they are an easy target for others to break in. They can then disconnect the auto garage door opener and manually roll the door up, and simply drive or push your car out without you hearing a sound. If you typically leave your keys in the ignition when parked in the garage, that's an open invitation to have the car stolen.
yes, it counts as theft, but I'm not sure how you'd be covered for personal injury - thats why, IMHO I think if you get in that type of horrendous situation, you're better off just letting them have the car.
Thanks for the wake up call. I used to work in Luton and it is pretty rough, but then so is the East End!
I am trying to picture how you managed to whack the guy after they took your keys. Must have been quite a move, even if they were right by the car. It all could have ended much worse... I have been chased bu pissed of drivers twice that I can remember, once in London and once in Belgium, got away each time...
I read about some attempted car jacking in Oxford Street where one stood in front of the car while they went for the driver

Time has changed and things gotten quite ugly nowadays. These are what people see in the cities surrounding by the once nice SF area. Even SF itself not immune from crimes.
Dealer tried to sell me a car without the Nav and he didn't know .....
If you get into the wrong area, you can probably get out quick with your Nav on hand.
