Hi to you all. I have already got about 2000 km on my new slk and a small but annoying problem has appeared. The vario roof when closed makes an annoying noise when the road has few bumps in it. When the roof is open then the noise disappears. Has anybody noticed the same problem. Is it normal? If not can it be fixed, because my dealership advised me not to touch the vario roof.
The only wierd rattling noise I can hear is the movement on the button which holds the seat belts in place...annoying but can't be helped...apart from that I haven't heard any noises.
hey greekslk, i ve got 4500 km on the clock already and so far so good. did your dealer say to change engine oil after the run-in period?i m gonna do it after 7500km, i have a dealer who is really into this stuff. he s so clever.some friends also who are mechanics advice me to do it as well.
ok, your prob now, i hear some creaking noises from my roof too when i switch off the radio i there is complete silence, on bumpy roads but not on every single bump! i dunno what happens but it doesnt occur on all bumps. that noise is not annoying though! what about yours? the noise occurs around 20-30km/hour top, after that speed the noise disappears. do you hear the noise at all speeds? i ve read an article on a mag saying that many journalists were disappointed by those creaks from the windows. maybe is from the windows.
check gasket in your car, if they has some uncleanness you have to clean up surface and then besmear special fluid for this. I do it in my R170 and it's work[8D]. I mention that in my country we have some bad roads [:(!]... In my SLK350 I've 1286 km and I don't hear any noise (I am sensitized on this point ) [8)]
Hi again. Greek1 I was waiting for your answer because we are driving in similar conditions (you know ... greek roads). Actually how annoying a noise can be is subjective. I can not say that I cannot handle it, but when you buy a car like that you expect some things. As you have said the noise can be heard in low speed, because in higher speeds the engine noise overcomes the creaks (reminding you that I have sport suspension, and 17 rims, so the problem is bigger). So do you suggest anything? What has your dealership advised you?
hey greekslk, i didnt ask anything to the dealer but as gatecrash wisely advises grease the joints a bit, i think that s the prob.oh no man! lowered suspension an 17" rims?? i can imagine the creaks u hear now!
who told u not to touch the roof? of course u cant touch it cos there s nothing wrong with it! the dealer or the specialized mechanic? and then again how specialized is your mechanic in your hometown? anyway when i pop around to my dealer i ll ask it 4 both of us.
what about your engine oil after run-in?
change or not?
Hi Greek1 again. First of all concerning the engine oil they have not told me something specific. They have just told me that it would be better to make the first service at 10.000 km or at least 15.000 instead of 20.000 which is the officialy scheduled.
I would appreciate to ask your mechanic about the roof. Because as you have said the noise might not be so annoying, however do you imagine how annoying the noise will be after 2-3 years?? The car is new now..
I'm still wondering if I should get an SL or an SLK [:D] so I have no owner experience with the MB folding hardtop [:(] …however, I do have a fair bit of experience dealing with noises from the rubber seals for doors and sunroofs.
If you think the noise is coming from a seal try applying some automotive grade silicone rubber conditioner on it. For the SLK I would suggest you spray the silicone on a good quality papertowel and apply it carefully along the rubber seals that make final contact along the opening. Make sure the silicone is automotive grade as I understand older non-specific formulas may actually damage the rubber.
The seals in my E39 BMW 540i are known to get noisy with age and silicone treatment completely removes all the squeaks. You have to apply a liberal amount and let it soak in.
If you're picky and only want the more expensive imported stuff you can opt for the German version of the silicone rubber conditioner, "Gummi-Pflege" (rubber protector).
If the noise does not sound like it's coming from a rubber seal then you'll have to look elsewhere.[?]
Hi Greekslk, I have not got your problem yet the car is only 1 day old but my previous slk squeaked and groaned alot, the dealer used some lube on the seals and that worked (for a while).
