"Start Error" in dash readout

Hi Guys,
so I got the dreaded "start error". Called 1-800 For Merc. He came and said battery was fine, but both my keys wont work and they don't even unlock or lock the doors. He said the fact that it says "start error" means there is nothing he could do that basically either the keys aren't talking to the car or the car isnt accepting the keys IR code. So it was towed to the dealership.

So now the dealership is saying that the tranny leak at sensor (which I have ignored for years) has leaked fluid along the wires and ended up getting fluid in some control module. They say this control module is not allowing the car to start. So they need to order one and replace it to the tune of $1000.

Well, I tend to not believe this. Car was running absolutely excellent and then just wouldn't start. Does this sound right? I saw some old posts where someone said the chrome ring around his ignition was loose, another that said the PCM module was bad. And then one post which said all I had to do was change the batteries on the key remotes and reprogram them??

Anyone have any thoughts on this? So damn frustrating to be at the dealer's mercy.

Just a thought, do you have a spare key? maybe the other one will work.

both keys don't work...but after reading about the K40 board, I'm wondering if that is the problem...

looks like the dealer may be right... module maybe fried or the key barrel cannot energise the key to read its code to authorise the start of the car

see documents from workshop manual... drive authorisation does not touch the k40..

START ERROR still should not prevent you from opening and closing doors etc... looks like your keys need to be re-syncronised to the car.

to sync
- direct the remote control signal towards the receiver in the front of the interior light and press the button twice briefly.
- within 30sec place the key in the igntion and turn the key to pos 2 (dont start motor).

locking system should be now operational. remove key and check

- ASP pulley kit
- 87mm supercharger pulley
- Ported Eaton M62 supercharger
- Ported supercharger inlet manifold
- MAF screen & throttle body screen delete
- Automatic intercooler spray kit
- Single 2.5" Magnaflow Hi-flow cat
- Magnaflow rear muffler + Lukey Ultraflo resonator
- Shift-I progressive shift light
- Custom ECU tune

Not going to preach to you about how stupid it is to ignore the leak for years, but although the dealer just replaces the board, many people had success by just spraying the board with MAF cleaner and then let it dry. Also need to spray the cable connectors at both ends and let the fluid drip out. You should actually drench the cable and repeat several times.
Of course if you haven't replace the connector you'll be wasting your time. The connector is less than $30 at the dealer (about $12 at Chrysler dealers) and about 15 minutes to replace.
