It apparently split apart, at around 49k miles. Sure made one hell of a noise. Service rep said it was the first he'd seen. Muffler failed about 20k miles earlier. Thank God the warranty was still in effect. Replaced a faulty fuel tank level sensor at the same time (gauge consistently showed 3/4 when the tank was full). Service rep said the guague thing is a pretty known issue. The consolation was that at least I have a pretty new exhaust system now--but boy, what poor quality.

Supersprint

The exhaust manifold is one ogf the well-known weak spots of the SLK. Mine never failed but I replaced it with a Supersprint manifold (plus muffler, of course). Nicer sound, a few more horses and probably longer lasting than the OEM parts.
