SLK in snow...not too bad...

This morning I was forced to take my SLK out on some snow covered roads. I don't have snow tires and I was very impressed with how well it handled. Obviously, I kept speed to a minimum, but at no point did I ever feel like I would get stuck or spin out of control. I imagine it would be a lot better with a good set of snow tires. I've heard many people complain about the car's snow capabilities, and I just wanted to post my viewpoint. The SLK is no AWD SUV, but if you're careful, you can still get where you need to go even in bad weather.

Good observation! I agree...

I drove mine with the stock tires on my 99 w/ Sport Pkg in freezing rain, snow and slush in the middle of an Iowa Winter and as long as I was extra cautious and had the seat heat up high :), I had complete confidence in the car. Granted, snow tires would be great for anyone that is going to try and drive like Normal on snow packed roads and expect nothing to happen, but it seems that many people can compensate (under allowable conditions) to drive in bad weather with stock tires. I cringe when I hear people complain that the SLK is no good in snow - its been said enough here! Its all about the tires (and driver to an extent as this thread prooves)

I usually get hit with a freak snowstorm once or twice a year on summer tires, and it does drive fine IF you slow down to a sane speed. ESP is really a wonderful invention.

You guys must have good tires, because the crap that came with my 230 Sport isn't even that good in the rain, let alone the snow.

I have to agree there. I've got Dunlop Winter Sport M2's and I've survived the winter so far, but I've had some trouble getting traction a few times and had the car fish tail a bit going up a couple of hills (including today). I drive REALLY slow though and get tailgated by SUV's all the time ;)

I had some scary moments in some very moderate rain in the old stock tires during the fall, I wouldn't dream of driving it in those in the snow.

I do have to say though that it's done about as well as (if not a little better than) my Eclipse Spyder did without snow tires last winter.

What came with the car? I got Toyo TS-1, so no snow driving for me, that's what the 91 Trooper is for.

We have had a pretty bad winter here in Toronto and the SLK has been alright, its worse since my car is lowered. I however have Pirreli snow tires on it and I would not reccomend these, they have a new pattern out this year so hopefully the new ones are better than the last. Boxter Boy, do you have an SLK, I have always wondered this?

Yeah, I have a 99 230 Sport (picture in the tint thread) and a 99 Boxster. I think it has Conti tires, which are just dreadful.

Such a thoroughly engineered car, why'd they outfit it with such terrible stock tires? And how'd they miss the side mirror wind-noise problem? And the net windstopper is a sad excuse on a $50K car. Guess they spent all the R&D money on the trick roof. And what about the bad seats?

Shane, eat me. I'm back because I missed your stupidity, and true to form, you didn't let me down.
