Hello!
I'm looking into buying a 2001 SLK230, it seems like a great deal.
The good:
It has just under 40k miles, and is a one owner (they don't have the service records, but it has all been done at dealership so can get it printed out).
The bad:
Totaled title (it was rear ended while parked, I'm hoping to see pictures to verify damage...don't know the difference between totaled title and salvage title...or if its still licensable in my state but will verify prior to purchase). The visual damage has been repaired, however the top does not work and the trunk does not lock. I've read through a few of the forums about people that have trunk issues and it sounds like if it is out of alignment...I may just not have a convertible. I haven't driven the car yet but will listen for noises etc when you 'press the button' to see if the roof still has the potential to function.
What are your thoughts? The price of the car is under 7k, I haven't driven it yet but would LOVE to have a cute sporty car that will most likely not be my daily driver. I think I can do a lot of the 'normal' maintenance myself, but most major work will be going to a dealership (or a friend who used to have an 80's SL something....with the funky hydraulics grey market).
So, knowing that the roof/trunk has issues....is this something that I should even be considering? I am attracted by the low miles, I originally was looking for a SLK320 but they all have higher mileage and cost more (of course they also haven't been hit). I don't need a car right now, but this almost seems like too good of a deal...
Assuming that when I drive the car everything seems to be in mechanical order (I'd probably still have it taken somewhere to be looked over)...are the trunk/roof issues completely unfixable?
Sorry about the messy post & thanks for any input!
