Question for SLK230 driver's w/manual transmissions

I recently sold my '98 SLK230, and I am missing it dearly. I am seriously thinking of returning to another SLK if I can find one with the "sport package" and 5spd. transmission. I know in my automatic, in order to raise and lower the top, the car needed to be in park or at a complete stop. Do the manual transmissions have to be in a certain gear, or in neutral to operate the top?

Thanks in advance[:)]

manual transmission & convertible top

If the car is running and in gear, the clutch would need to be depressed, which puts some wear on the clutch.

And if the car is moving, putting the top up or down is not recommended and a warning sound is activated.

So I'd say turn the car on or off, put it in neutral and raise or lower the top.

Hope this helps.

No. But you have to be stationary - or going very slowly

You can move slowly in my 01 while putting top up or down...

Plus, I think there is a kit you can buy that will let you operate the top up to 20mph. Sounds dangerous to me, but hey, who am I to say what the car is capable of?

severcaraddict, if you're interested, my SLK is for sale and also available for lease transfer...

Todd, if you want to E-mail me

Some pictures of your SLK, I will look over them and consider it. I won't be buying until after the first of the year. I have 2 cars right now that I must sell first. Can I ask why you are selling it?

My Email address is:

It doesnt have to be in park in my 98 automatic

But if i start to put the top down and I accelerate over about 2mph it will beep and it will stop going down untill I stop again.

Kind of embarrasing when it doesnt get all the way down at the redlight and I have to drive 15mph to the nearest parking lot with the top mostly down and the trunk all up in the air!

Roof Down

I have a 99 230 and find that I can put the roof down while moving very slowly 5- 10 MPH max. As said above the car beeps and if I go above this speed it stops in mid air until I am stationary again. I have only been caught out a couple of times at traffic lights when they have changed and I have had to move away very slowly until it is safely down. Most times people don't get too upset as they are interested to see how it all works. I guess the novelty will wear off eventually but until then!!

The only times I 'move' with my car when putting the top up or down is when I'm parking my car at my home. Since I have to park my car in an incline on front of the garage door, I have to back up into it after having driven past the said incline.

So all I do is once I'm ready, I just put the vehicle on reverse, begin parking it and at the same time I keep the button pressed for the roof to go back up.

Voila, perfect timing. I finish parking the car, placing the gears on P mode and pulling the handbrake by the time the windows come up again [;)]

Any other time, I open and close the roof while I'm completely stationary.
