What is faster a SLK32 or a SL55?
Well?
Lets complicate and muddy the waters a little here. Say the SLK32 owner threw caution to the wind and embraced an aftermarket tuning company called renntech. Say some pulleys and an ECU upgrade were done to the little slk. Who would win then, if the SL55 was stock?
I feel confident that the SL55 has a definite superiority on the top end. Down low, below 100mph would be close, but as the big V8 starts to breathe long in the gearing I think the SL55 might still pull the slightly modified SLK32. Sad, but the trap speeds in the quarter mile imply this is the outcome. 112mph is the best recorded trap speed for a SLK32 with the above mentioned mods. A stock SL55 does anything from 111mph to 115mph according to various mags. Think of the outcome if the SL55 had the same mods as the slk32! That is truly a Viper contender with serious refinement instead of kit car panache.
Also, I drove a friends new sl500 with the standard suspension a couple of weeks ago. Very smooth. Remarkably smooth for a shortish wheelbase car. I was suitably impressed. No flex on rough streets with the top down. No harsh impacts either. Too bad it was that damn green color. I tell you, my friends have the most offbeat taste in colors.

The SL55 has problems off the line even with ESP on! Spins the tires, brakes try to control, no good (revs already near redline!), so it lets off power, regain traction, full power, repeat. It's tough!
I think a Renntech'd Pulley + ECU SLK 32 will be even with a SL 55 AMG at speed.

How about you go the whole way instead, increase displacement to 3.6-3.8 liters on the SLK 32, AND all the other stuff. Get it down to 460bhp. Then I think the SLK 32 would win hands down ;) (oh, and goodbye $25k after such an 'intervention' )

I drove it last weekend. It is incredible fast and beautiful car. I absolutely love it.
BTW the E55 was tested with a 0-100kph time of 4.7sec!!! in 2 magazines.
The 395HP MKB SLK32 was tested with 4.8sec, the standard SLK32 AMG with 5.0sec.
The official DC data for the SLK32 AMG is 5.2sec for 0-100kph.

Several Magazines in the US have tested the SLK32 at 0-60 - 4.5 ranging to 4.8 on the highside (Also the MB Quoted Number) 0-100km/h (0-62mph) should be close to that.
1/4 Mile - 12.9 - 13.1 (Timeslips to back this # up as well)
