Hydraulic Fluid for Roof Pump

Does anyone know what type of hydraulic fluid is used in the pump for refill and can it be simply purchased at your local auto parts store?

Hydraulic fluid: Mercedes part#A 000 989 91 03 10, approx 400 ml for a complete fill. It is produced by Aral Vitamol as ZH-M hydraulic fluid. I am not aware of any proven substitute. However, the cost is reportedly only $15.00 per liter. Mercedes also uses this oil in their hydropneumatic suspension, and all the other convertibles old and current so dealers should have stock.

Just as an aside, my local Benz indy sold me the ZH-M fluid 02615 (made by febi-bilstein) for the power steering. I assume it's the same stuff?

Febi Bilstein # 02615 Hydraulic Fluid ZH-M may be cheaper.
Remove the allen bolt plug on the top of the pump, run a tube into the hole. Carefull not to drop the plug, space is tight in there.

Thanks for the info. The top is working again! Is the ram at the top/windshield interface hard to replace?

Thanks for the lead. I'll check it out. Does anyone know if a ram can be rebuilt? Seals, etc?

There have been a couple of threads here about people that were going to attempt it but, I don't know if any of them were actually successful. Part of the problem is that the fitting is not practical to remove. A replacement comes as an assembly with the hose.

In other words, rebuilding is not practical but let us know if you decide to tackle it.

Was told by MB dealer that steering and roof fluid are not the same. Has anyone tried?
