Yes! Rudolf Diesel invented the Diesel Engine in 1892

See this site for information:
http://www.howstuffworks.com/diesel.htm
It is common for diesel engines in Truck Tractors, like Freightliner trucks (a MB company) to get 750,000 to 1,000,000 miles before rebuilding.
They usually have higher maximum torgue and higher compression ratios, they are more efficient, they turn slower and last longer (have less parts, for example no spark plugs). When you see a large class 8 truck on the freeway during 65 miles per hour, the engine is only turning around 1500 RPMs.

No, General Motors proved that a few years ago.

But if you want to talk about Mercedes Diesels, that would be a different story. [:)]
Diesel engines are normally built with much heavier blocks and other components, and as bgoin stated, turn over at lower speeds. Lower overall operating temperatures tend to help the engine last longer as well.
