After checking every last switch in the Vario roof system, I still cannot get this thing to open properly.
It begins to open, then when the roof section is halfway open (rear window part nearly vertical), it stops. No reaction from there, except killing ignition lets the thing settle into the trunk/boot. The trunk lid remains open. Restoring power and trying the roof switch in either direction makes the hydraulic pump run, but it seems to be trying to push the folded roof assembly deeper into the trunk cavity.
Does anyone have information about the system:
1. A blow-by-blow logic flow diagram of what happens when in the process of opening/closing the roof.
2. A pic/description of where the module is that controls the roof process.
There is obviously some logical condition that comes into play at the mid-point of roof opening. I would like to tap into the signals from all the switches to monitor this process nad see where the fault is. I likely have a wiring fault, as the switches are all OK.
I've dug deeper into the roof system than what I have heard about on these forums, and have done extensive searches here and elsewhere, and I'm stuck. I'm an EE so I'm not afraid of the electronics (I'll make my own damned controller if needed)...
Thanks to all on here - this forum has been a godsend for info about these rather poorly-documented little cars!

How long since you lubed the hinges? - mine was similar but blew the 40 amp main fuse repeatedly just after the trunk opened and roof started to rise - lubing hinges fixed it
Dear Yendor,
i was referred to this site by bazzle and saw his response to your inquiry about the process involved in the retractable top of an slk. I too have a 99 slk 230 kompressor with a top problem and have done considerable research on iot without any definitive help so far. I hope you can shed some light on this; i will be most grateful. My trunk opens all the way and then the process stops (The top is up and won't retract.) I had it diagnosed at MB dealer and they said top sw are faulty and wanted $900.00 to repair. I said no. So here I am, wandering what to do next. IF I release the hydraulic pressure on the pump with the hex wrench, I am fairly certain that I can then unlock the latches with the access port in the roof. So, then what? Do I repressurize the pump to seeif the remaider of the process will operate? It seems to me from studying bazzle's schematic that the opening of the trunk and the unlocking of the roof at the winshield pillar are all part of step 1. So, why would the trunk open and the roof not unlatch if the same switch operates by steps and the trunk does open? I know nothing about electronics and I know that you do and hope you may have some answers. Also, do you think that if I get the top down by using 50/50 method (first half switch, second half manually), that I run the risk that the rear quarter windows won't come up again when I try to bring the top up with the electronics/hydraulics? Any thoughts are appreciated.littleb.

What are you using to lube the hinges? Are there any plastic parts? Might a spray Teflon lube be good?

How it stops ? Is the hydraulic pump stops or pumps is still going, but roof is not moving ? Any error signals like flashing roof switch beeps ? Any garbage caught up in the mechanism ?
