I changed out my battery last weekend with no problems by placing a load on battery before connecting it to the car. I was going to get the antizap thingy but paranoid that the thing might short or something.

I have taken my battery in 7 out of my car at least 10 times & never saw any of the events described by mitchshin. Thats crazy; I even replaced my old MB battery with a Halfords one 2 weeks ago (half the price of a MB) and all went well.
What kinds of alarms/ extra security have you on your car?

Terminals
eBay Motors: GOLD BATTERY TERMINAL WITH LED VOLTAGE DISPLAY new (item 290175009347 end time Nov-02-07 14:22:10 PDT)

I hooked it up to the switch (so I could view the display when I wanted to) that you see mounted in the wire battery strap.
When you start the car it stays on for a minute or two then shuts off automaticaly.

It also acts as a alternator checker as you can see if the battery is charging based on the voltage displayed when the car is running.

12 volts when the car is off.
13+ when it is running.

OK,
It happened to me once & never again (I hope)! There are several options you can do to address the cluster (after the fact).

1. You can buy your own brand new cluster (I did this online @ Duval Motorcar in Florida, MB dealer) for 700 some bucks.
2. You can have MB dealer order it for you for $1500.
3. You can have your old one reset by a cluster company in Springfield, Mass (BBA-reman) for about $250 for 2-3 days turnaround. I verified the model & sent photos, they said it can be fixed/reset. They specialized in Euro electronics and do japs too.

Installation by dealer is about $150

I drove the benz with my cluster not functioning for few months , then my K40 crapped out. So I decided to do the first step and also replaced the K40 by dealer for total of $1500. It's easy process if you have time! I rarely have time anymore for that, that's why I ask my guys to help me with it If you have time, I suggest do the 3rd option & install it back yourself. The battery minder is also good thing to have. I think the reason it happened is because one of the fail safe diodes blew (I think), that's why everyone recommends the battery minder. Anyway, that's my 2 cents worth. The car works great now

Thanks dwieden for all of the good info.
I had already contacted BBA-Reman and am waiting to hear back from them.
I was tempted to purchase a used cluster off of eBay ($100-$400), but I think having mine repaired is the way to go. Meanwhile, I will be getting that voltage regulator hooked up.

I did not know that the Outside Temp gauge could be switched to Celsius and the clock could be switched to military time until my cluster got zapped. How are these functions switched manually?

The anti zap device is nice but expensive for what it does and if you go to a local electronics store and get your seft a huge capacitor and some wires and lugs all for less than $10 it will do the same job granted it wont be as pretty as $200 matson unit but in electronics looks dont count but if it does the job. Get a 100uF capacitor and slap it across the posts and it will do the job just as well as matson for a lot less money

My Matson cost $12.
You dont need the welding one.
A capacitor will not do the job. You also need spike supression (clipping diodes)
You wire it one side hard to ground (brown terminal next to batt and the pos direct to pos term so it is always in cct when batt is disconnected.
