Hello folks, I have a 98 SLK230 am doing some maintenance and fixing things up in my car this week. I had a quick question: is there some sort of maintenance you need to do on the roof? Maybe lube some parts or something? What parts, if so? I do hear some creaking every once in a while whenever things get shaken up like when I go over some rough roads or something of that sort. Any common problems I should also be looking for? Thanks
Yes, there are many threads here on it. Search for Vario, rubber grease, sticking roof, etc. I am in the same boat, after reading all the threads and not being able to find rubber grease I'm just going to bite the bullet and buy the MB roof lube for the rubbers.
I'm using spray on white lithium for the hinges (wrapping the joing to prevent overspray is the hard part). Haven't had a problem since, but I'm going to lubricate the rubber also.
NAPA auto parts stores have a product called Sly-Ese (sp?). However it's spelled, it's thier own branded product and the person behind the counter will now what it is. It's a silicone-based grease in a tube. I've had 3 Corvettes and now my SLK that I've used this on all the rubber around the windows and tops. It works great and I've never had any problems with it. I started using it because the owner's manual for my first Vette said to use a silicon grease.

So,
Do you like the SLK or Vette the best?
Any plus or minus to either?

I've read not to use silicone-based lube on the rubber parts, I think I read that on the car-care forum here on BenzWorld. I use Aerospace 303 because it is not silicone-based. It works good but doesn't last a long time, I try to reapply it every couple of washings.
Yes, I've heard that about not using silicone on rubber. Well, I used it on my Vettes for about 4+ years on each of the three of them (a 1980, 1994, and a 1998) and it seemed to work just great. I never detected any damage at all. My Vette user's manual said to use silicone grease and it also says that on the tube. One thing though, I got the name wrong. I looked at the tube and it's called Sil-Glyde.
As for comparing my Vettes to the SLK, they don't compare. It's apples to oranges. Big engine, huge torque, sports car... smooth, refined, slassy little roadster. Love them both.
I just got a tube of the PBR yesterday, but haven't had a chance to use it yet. I got it through HRPWorld.com Race Car Parts and Supplies. They're in Peoria, Il. The price was about $8.00 plus UPS ground shipping. I won't know the actual shipping charge until I get my credit card statement. I wasn't too thrilled about not knowing the full cost in advance, but I figure it can't be too much. Wish me luck on that. I got it in six days (DC suburbs).
Cool, thanks guys I will get the PBR for the rubber and maybe some sort of silicone or lithium spray for the hinges. Which hinges do I spray them on though? Just everything? Also, the PBR on everything rubber?

Yup, all the hinge points. Open the roof halfway and you'll find plenty of points to lube :-)
