Auto tranny also shift automatically even in manual mode??

I wanted to know how far I could push my 230K so I decided to shift manually.
When I was in 3th I hit the pedal and asked myself if the car will shift gear on its own when hitting the red zone...It does!

Offcourse most of you will say thats a good thing, because the car won't let you kill the engine but on the other hand it's kinda forced isn't it? There is NO way in forcing your will on the car.

The older transmissions would go to red line and then the rev. limiter.....

would kick in, the newer ones just up shift at that point. Both programs have their benefits and I'm not sure which I prefer............

It's off course a safe feeling when knowing that you can't hurt the engine...

...but like I said, this way 'man listens to machine'. (to put it in Terminator vocabulary =)

I think I'd prefer...

...to have it shift gears up. Once I forgot that I was driving while playing with the gears (I have an automatic, so I was shifting between the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and D for fun) and came to some lights. The lights just kept on staying red for what seemed like an eternity.

During this time I forgot that I had left it on 2nd and as I drove away, at first I didn't notice that it was missing the initial strength to pull off (2nd ain't half bad in the SLK ;) ) and turned off to this one road where you can do a hundred.

So I put the foot to the pedal and speed away, only feel VERY nasty stuttering as the car reaches the rev limit and cuts off the throttle only to activate it again when the meter drops below the red line.

At first I was like 'eek, did I just break something' and hten realised that I was still on the second.

Well, that's the day I realised my particular model will not shift up :( I'd rather like to see it shift up then do this stuttering which felt just downright nasty. Atleast if it shifts up, you know at a certain point that you are going fast and need to slow down, but driving for a long period of time on the 1st or 2nd at high revs just can't be good :(

mine not!

I have a 230K evo year 2001 model ( imported from germany) and my transmission doesn't shift in manual mode. The engine hit the redline and revs-limiters cut the power. I don't think my trasmission is an older one , I think is the last type...

mrfear
