key fob error help!

hey my gal pals 98 230 has an error when you try to start it. it opens the doors via the buttons but when you insert the key and turn it begins cranking for 1 second, then stops and says "error" what is going on here? this was a new fob that came programmed and it DID work briefly to start the car, but then developed this error thing. MB says its wiring or a module but since the valet key works i am suspicious of this diagnosis.

The fob and valet key contain an embedded RFID (radio frequency identification). If car does not recognize the RFID it won't start. Could be wiring, the DAS (drive authentication system) module, or the coil around the lock, but if the valet key works like you I'd suspect the fob. Where did you get it?

it came from benz with pre programming i believe from her VIN number. and she carries both keys on the massive wad of crap she calls a keychain (weighs about 5 lbs and i wonder how good that can be for the ign switch!) so if the authenticator can detect the valet key from a short distance?> I dunno where i was going with that.......program must have changed by itself like a james bond self destroying message chip.

I'd go back to the dealer with the working valet key for demonstration purposes and ask them to make it right with the fob. Sounds like it went bad.

it was at the dealer, they think its wiring or modules, 500$ minimum and that speech cost 125$ alone! for 500 i think she should just use two keys or forget the fob, but it was 200 a few months ago anyway.
