My girlfriend's SLK 320 has the stock OEM Xenon headlights. As most of you know, that's an expensive factory option and the stock Xenon's are much nicer than the aftermarket HID bulbs. So here's my dilemah.....I love the look of the new clear headlight lense, but only want the lense. I know the headlight comes as one unit, but is it easy/possible to just swap the lense covers? Also, it should be much cheaper if we only need the lense covers. Does anyone know about this? Thanks.
I would not recommend doing this. The stock lens forms part of the diffusion pattern for the HID bulbs. Your lighting pattern would be terrible.
In any case, I find the diffusion pattern of the clear headlights with halogen bulbs to be far superior to the stock SLK xenons. In fact, I find the halogens in my wife's C320 to be better than the SLK xenons. I personally think the stock xenon headlights are simply not that good.
(Now that I've said that, does anyone want to buy my factory xenon headlights? Make me an offer!)
However, you CAN have the clear headlights and xenons by using H4 xenon bulbs and the stock HID ballast unit. But you're going to make a bunch of oncoming traffic very mad unless you have the lights aimed just right...
