Hey, quick question I was unable to find an answer to in the archives:
Does anyone know the procedure to check the clutch condition? Usually there's a little inspection hole somewhere on the bellhousing that one can use to measure the clutch plate thickness but I don't know the location, nor do I know the exact procedure for checking wear condition on this particular car. I do have the Crossfire manual but I'm also not sure that's the same transmission (downloaded it just for the engine-specific data).
I'm afraid that if I go to a dealership or transmission shop and ask them they'll either charge me a small fortune just to check it or give me the old, "gee, you should be glad you brought it in when you did! It's about to fail and we can replace it for you now for $2,000" routine.
The car does have a full warranty but unfortunately clutches are a "deliberately excluded" item. I have no reason to suspect it's going bad, but I'd feel better knowing I've got 30,000 miles worth of life left on it versus 3,000 or something like that. . .
Car is an '01 SLK-320 with about 50k miles on it. TIA.

I can't answer your question on how to check the thickness but I can tell you that I became curious about how much wear was left in my clutch at about 50k miles. I had the dealer check the wear as part of the regular service. They reported "many more miles" of wear to go. Now I'm at 99,180 miles on the same clutch with no problems and beginning to wonder how much longer it can last! Of course a lot depends on driving conditions, etc but I would expect you have "many miles to go" as well as I understand the 2001 230 and the 320 used the same 6-speed. Anyone else with a clutch wear experience to share?
