Jacking the car up

The standard jack doe not seem too safe to me and I wonder if the 4 rubber cones at each corner of the car are Ok to put an additional jack/axle stand underneath to take the weight of the car when I take the wheels off?

If you're talking about the four pieces just inboard of the wheelwells, that's what they are there for... That's normally the points they use when the car goes on a lift.

I had used a hydraulic floor jack and a piece of wood to raise the rear of the car by jacking up the differential. This way I could put both jack stands on each side of the car at the same time. Is jacking up the car via the diff a bad idea? I got the idea from one of the instructional web sites that one of our forum members put together.

I saw them do that to my 190E at a tire shop that handled Mercedes all the time. It sent chills up my spine, but there were apparently no ill effects. I would like to know if the area where the diff is bolted on is strong enough to handle the load in that direction, I haven't got a clue. Side loads and twist loads through that area are a lot different then what a jack would add. Hell bells, I'm not sure the diff is designed to take that kind of a load.....

I saw my independant Benz guy do the diff thing and was also horrified -- wouldn't do it myself
That OEM jack is a killer! Wobbles all over the place - I would only use it in an emergency

I use the rear diff on my c230 all the time jack the rear up. Also on the front there's a rubber hokey puck looking thing that's the lift point for the front. Then I used the jack stands in the factory jack points. Haven't had to jack up the SLK230 but I don't see why I wouldn't use the rear diff.

I have been jacking up cars for 30 years and use the diff all the time.
It is perfectly fine to use it.

I would not use wood between the jack and diff as it will slip off.

Most floor jacks have a cup at the lifting point, use that.
