So does anyone know if Magna Donelly ever had a recall on this item? For those of you that did get a replacement, is it still working properly? Does anyone know any alternates that can be used? I have been looking at CIPA, but not really sure if compatable and most of them have more features like thermostat and compass. The Magna Donnelly currently in mine does not have any other features other than garage remote and auto dimming. I will take pictures of my mirror if anyone is interested in seeing what it looks like. It is hard to see anything out of it.
Before I was lucky enought to get a replacement, I considered replacing the original with a manual mirror. I think they sell for a fraction of the auto mirror's price. I'm sorry if that's not much help, but it's something to try. For what it's worth, my replacement is functioning perfectly. But if it ever goes bad, I plan to get a simple manual mirror. Before I replaced the original, it was almost useless.
So far the news is getting more frustrating. I went to Mercedes and asked to just have a plain (non dimming) rear view mirror installed. I was told that by doing this, my extended warranty will not cover that part.
The auto dimming is electronic which could be covered under my extended warranty.
Yeah ! ! a big smile came across my face. But the service gentleman that I spoke to said it has to have a diagnostic test which is $180 and if the rear view mirror is not included in this, not only do I have to pay for the total cost of the mirror, and the installation /labor but also the $180 diagnostic charge. BUT if it is covered, just $50.
I am not a big gambler and do not want to roll the dice. I have not done anything yet. I am still checking other options. I appreciate everyones responses and if I get good news I will share it.

That sounds like a ploy to get you to pay for the mirror. No "diagnostic test" is required to see that the mirror is faulty. AND if I recall correctly, a manual mirror only costs around $40. So it looks to me like they are going to get you to pay $180 and then give you back less. How can they not tell you whether or not the mirror would be covered before they start their "test"?!?. No wonder they push these extended warranties...
Yeah not sure. I mean I cannot even see out of it. But hearing that the non dimming was a special order part made my mouth drop open. I thought the guy was messing with me because I am female.

Your mirror looks like all of ours. You can see that without a "diagnostic check". The dealer might be messing with you, but the fact that the mirror is a "special order" shouldn't frighten you. Remember that these cars have been out of production for awhile now, and they don't stock everything. Go back and read the entire thread, and you'll find reference to the manual mirror, along with a couple photos. If your dealer is a jerk, you can use the power of the internet to find the part at another dealer, or get one from an independant distributor. If you don't have a good local mechanic, you should start looking for one. Dealers exist to sell cars, and making repairs to older cars expensive helps in that regard. I have five cars, two under warranty. Those two go to the dealer for repairs. The other three get repaired by me or by two local independant mechanics (one does domestic and one foreign). If you snoop around on this forum, you can find solutions for most everything, but you have to dig around.
Hi! Can anyone tell me which fuse controls the rear view mirror? My son noticed that the little green light for the sensor was not lit and the mirror appears to be smudged and not dimming. I looked on the fusebox list but it doesn't specify. Any help? Thanks1
Hi,
I called Dani from Magna Donnelly and she is no longer with the company.
Can anyone suggest an inexpensive way to replace my broken/leaking driver's side exterior mirror? Dimming is not important to me... I just want a mirror that I can see out of. My car is a Mercedes C230 Kompressor. Unfortunately my warranty expired so it's not covered.
Now, the dealer is asking $680! No way... it seems like a rip off and seems more like a safety issue and manufacturer defect that should be replaced for free.
Hello everyone,
I thought I posted a question a few weeks back about this, but I must have dreamed it as I can't find it.
For the record, my own 1999 SLK230 has been struck with the leaking mirror. I was pleased to see a detailed thread about this problem. Thank you to everyone who contributed. Misery loves company. I'm also looking for a solution.
Based on this thread, I also called Magna Donelly, and using the magic of random extension searching, I got a gentleman who directed me to call:
Steve Chenlo
616-786-7495
and I left a voicemail for him. I will report back as soon as I hear more.
