I too got my replacement and thanks to the instructions found in this forum, changing it out was easy. The only problem I'm having is getting the panel completely back in place the way it was before I removed it. The ends are not flush with the windshield, and a small part of the metal plate underneath it is visible on both sides.
It there a trick to getting this snugly back in place?
I know this is late, but I had the same problem and called the dealer who stated that the new mirror cost somewhere around $300 or so. They didn't tell me this, but I found out they have the exact mirror, but without the auto-dim feature (it has the small button at the bottom, for manual dimming), for 40 bucks!
As you can see from the photo, the two mirrors are identical. Guess which one I opted for?
99 SLK 230 - mind mentioning the part number for the manually operated mirror? The nighttime performance of my original electronic mirror gradually degraded to nil; however, there is no noticeable "lava lamp" effect (i.e., leakage). I'm still waiting for a reply from Donnelly Corp., but I think I'm on my own with this one.
The interior rearview mirror on my 1999 230SLK started to leak a few weeks ago - showing the dreaded lava lamp bubbles. I had read several posts here about others with this problem who bought new mirrors (about $180) and did the replacement themselves. I turned my mirror around and found out that is was made by the Donnelly Corp. and I tracked them down to Holland, MI. After a few calls I found their Quality Assurance person in charge of "leakers". Had a nice conversation with him and bottom line was as follows: I had to fill out an on-line warranty claim form and attach two digital photos. In a few days I was told that a new mirror was on the way and I needed to send the old one back ( the numbers for Donnelly's FedEx and UPS accounts were provided so this cost me nothing). The new mirror came and it is an exact replacement for the old one. I installed it using the instructions I found in the archives on this site, a 20 minute job. So, if you have a Donnelly mirror that has gone bad you might want to call Mr. Heath Flanery, Magna Donnelly Corporation, 616-786-7495 and see what he can do for you.
STEVES,
Thank you so much for doing the legwork to research this and passing along the name and Ph# to all the forum members here. You have saved us each almost $200.00. From signing up on this forum ~ to just recieving a "replacement rear view mirror" all within a week...WOW!!! I'm pretty impressed!!!
It is also so nice to see a company (Magna Donnally Corp) that actually stands behind it's products and people with actual customer service skills (Dani).

Sorry for the late response.
That part number is 170 810 0317.
If I would've had the info at the time, I would have tried the option that was outlined above. But failing that, I think this is your best option.
gmnirdm - Thanks for the direct line number for Dani. Ironically, I got a call from her yesterday. After explaining my situation, she didn't hesitate to offer a free replacement. Needless to say, I was pleasantly surprised. The replacement mirror shipped today. Very impressive customer service...a little surprising this day and age.
99 SLK 230 - Thanks for passing along the part number for the other mirror type! Hopefully I won't need it anytime soon.
