Thanx - submitted complaint to NHTSA re inside rear view today. Mirror became blurred with large bubbles - kind of an out of car experience! Looks like you are just driving out of heavy fog ..... Plan on talking to Sybesma’s Electronics unless there is better advice.

I just replaced my rearview mirror today. My 2001 OEM mirror still worked fine, but the spring clip that holds it onto the post lost tension, and the mirror would shake. I removed it once and tried to squeeze the clip a bit to tighten it, but to no avail.
So I ordered the non-electronic manual dimming version from Mercedes Parts Superstore (for $28 shipped). Took about 1 minute to replace (but about half an hour to remove the windshield header piece to unplug the old one rather than clipping the wire). I was never a huge fan of the electronic one anyway, never seemed to be fast enough if I had an SUV on my tail with high-mounted brights.
I tried to get a replacement spring clip from the dealer, but that part is not available separately (worth about $0.15). They wanted $181 for the electronic mirror. NFW.
Hi. Just called this place and Donnelly no longer issues free replacements but they forwarded me to a company called Sybesmas 800-456-4265 and they said they offer and exchange program for $75.. They are e-mailing me the info and I'll do this in the next month. Right now I need address the lava lamp I have for a drivers side mirror.
Mercedes seems to have isssues with the manufacturer or these rearview mirrors. Has anyone heard of a recall? I understand that Donnelly in Holland Michigan is forwarding calls to an aftermarket source who is charging somewhere in the area of $100.00 for the mirror plus shipment. I have never had a car needing a rearview mirror replacement.

No Recalls.
From my earlier post:
Well, I got tired of being blinded. I broke down and got another mirror. I called Magna Donnely and found out that there is a company they turned the mirrors over to for replacements. All you have to do is call them, fill out a claim form, take some pictures of your existing mirror, mount and wiring and they will send you a replacement for $75 plus shipping. When you get the new one you send yours back.
The company is Sybesma’s Electronics 616-392-6911 and the person I talked to is Stacy Svay.
At least this will save you some on the replacement cost.

I am working with Sybesmas for a rear view mirror replacement; so while I was at it removing the old mirror, I took a couple pictures.
As said earlier, on later models there are two screws inside the housing of the interior light at the top of the windshield that need to come out to remove the panel at the top of the windshield. The lens comes off easily, if you know to just pull it straight down:
The two screws are up inside the housing:
Here is a picture of the back of the mirror, wiring and connector, so you see what you will be removing:
And the last image is of the mirror mount that is twisted 90 degrees to release it from the windshield; it has two opposing tabs that lock under the windshield mount. When turned 90 degrees they just disengage:
