I took my SLK in for some service yesterday, and afterwards I showed the service rep the recall letter I had recently received. The dealer had reparied both tail lights two weeks earlier. O f course, I wanted a refund. The service rep called the manager, and he told me that they do not have the new version of the tail lights and I had to wait until some time in 2007; then they would be able to replace the tail lights with the newer component, and at that time they would be able to refund the money I had paid for them to repair the lights.
I just went through this fiasco as well. Here's what I learned:
In the US, those in receipt of a recall letter who have paid for tail lamp replacements are entitled to a refund immediately. The service manager at your dealership will be able to process the refund, which may take a month or two, but will result in you receiving a check in the mail. If your dealership gives you grief, call 1-800-FOR-MERC (800-367-6372), and let them know your story. They'll tell you who to call and what to say, but as they told me, the service manager should definitely know the scoop.
If you have your letter and experience a failure, they'll do the replacement for free, but with identical bulbs & housings. It won't be until sometime this year that the redesigned housings are available - your letter indicates that another notice will be sent to you once the permanent replacements are ready.
We got a check in the mail today from Mercedes for the $182.60 that we spent a couple years ago to have one of the tail lights replaced.
I paid about $300 to have both taillight assemblies replaced about 2 years ago, but not at the dealer. I took the receipt and all the information per the instructions in the recall letter to the dealer for reimbursement. I was very surprised when my check for $130 came from the dealer. They claim that's what I would have paid if I had the work done there. Hard to believe. Going to re-engage, but could use some help. How much did others pay to have taillight assemblies replaced by M-B dealers?
My car is currently at the dealer. They just called me and said we got the new tail lights in but for some reason the indicator light is on, but no bulbs are out. If you want us to fix that we would have to charge you. I qwicky told him to put the olds ones back in! The response was... well we dont want to do that. He said they would take another look and call me back. Is that not crazy? Its like they said we fixed your shit but broke some other stuff while we were in there.

That's B.S!!!! If the bulb out indicator was not on when you brought it in and now after they "fixed" the rear tail light assemblies (under a recall no less) it's on, it's their problem! Something they did has caused the indicator to come on so it's their responsibility to figure it out and fix it IMO. Good luck, let us know how it turns out.

They think we drive our MB with cash sticking out of our butts!! Really, that sucks if they screw up your car.

Will you be so kind as to tell us what stealership this is? Totally unacceptable behaviour. If the wont back down I would put it on my amex then call and dispute the charges or write a check and cancel it :P.

If I recall, the cost of the tail light alone was $130.00, cost of installation would be extra.

There is always the possibility that another bulb not related to the tail lights burned out. Has anyone looked into that? If in fact the tail lights are the problem, that would be their problem, not yours....
