I had my tail lights replaced today at Benz of Houston (Greenway). They took about an hour or so. They gave me brand new tail lights with all the new guts in them.
I took my SLK in for some service yesterday, and afterwards I showed the service rep the recall letter I had recently received. The dealer had reparied both tail lights two weeks earlier. O f course, I wanted a refund. The service rep called the manager, and he told me that they do not have the new version of the tail lights and I had to wait until some time in 2007; then they would be able to replace the tail lights with the newer component, and at that time they would be able to refund the money I had paid for them to repair the lights.
I got the notice for my wife's '01 SLK320 in the mail this week. First letter of two, as shown in post #44. Unfortunately, the car is in England. I'll have to see if I can get MBUK to honor it, or my old dealership in Hawaii to honor it and ship me the parts. Fortunately, we have never had a problem with the lights on my wife's car.
Update, I just dropped off my '98 at the dealer, and he said that there are limited supplies so they may have to replace mine with the old-style if my VIN hasn't come up yet.
I guess I don't care, as I'll just keep taking it back if it fails again!
He claimed MB is sending out notices as parts become available. Something like that.
I guess I'll report tomorrow as to what ACTUAL repair was done.
>>>> update: They replaced both tail lamps with the updated equipment. At least this is what they tell me, as I didn't look closely enough at the old ones to see a difference!
Contacted the Daimler Chrysler customer service in Germany due to the recall in US and with the hope that we, the europeen clients would have the same offer for changing the tail light as same as for the US customers.
Negative answer from the Daimler Chrysler customer "service".
I will take it up with the proper authorities in Norway to put some pressure on the issue.
I hope that all members from Europe will do the same.

The way I read the letter, if your lights are bad now, they will replace the light assemblies with new ones of the old design and then when they have the new assemblies in the Spring they will replace them again. All at no charge.
thats right, I had mine replaced a couple months ago and paid for it. Now I finally got the "we'll fix it in spring" letter. I went to the dealer and they said they'll replace the parts again when I get the letter. At that point I'll receive the refund.
Yeppers. I have that cute little symbol on the dash, but the bulbs both of them are good. Think I'll just try a different brand of light (Hella or some such). Very easy to change out, but hazardous in traffic or bad weather. Thanks to this forum for that bit of INFO, I thought I had a loose chasis wire ?? Will try to effect repairs and return you my comment. Happy New Year :-)
