I guess I am the first to report receiving the recall letter for the FL models...it says it is the first of 2 letters I will receive. They don't have the new light assemblies yet but if I have a failure the dealer will replace the assembly with the current one at no charge. In the Spring of 2007 they expect to have the new assemblies available and I will receive a second notice at that time.
I hope everyone starts getting their letters so those with bad brake lights can get them repaired for free while we wait for the replacements. Both of mine were replaced just under 2 years ago under warranty and I modified the lamp holders with zip ties so I think they will be good until the new ones arrive.
The back of the letter also has instructions on how to get reimbursed if you already paid to have them repaired.
Looks like MB decided to do the right thing, much better than letting everyone "twist in the wind".
Maybe they read some of these posts and changed their policy.
Who knows?.
ANYWAY,GOOD NEWS.
thanks to everyone involved in this thread both taillights replaced at no charge today only AFTER presenting a copy of the campaign letter in rebuttle to MB $515.00 bill......THANKS GUYS!!!!!!!!!

Just went to mailbox, same letter as 16falcon.
Again, thanks to all who worked so hard to make this happen!!
Received my recall letter today here in SoCal....spring 2007 blah blah blah. I imagine this would have happened much quicker if fatalities could have occurred like those exploding gas tanks on Ford Pintos (yeah..remember them) or the 80's GM trucks.
I just got my letter today too.....i have been having problems with brake lights goin out at times......but the letter said beginning spring of 2007...do i have to wait...or can i get new ones now????

Read the letter. Keep your receipts and you are supposed to get reembursed.

The way I read the letter, if your lights are bad now, they will replace the light assemblies with new ones of the old design and then when they have the new assemblies in the Spring they will replace them again. All at no charge.

I got my letter today... and that's pretty much what mine said.
"This is the first of two letters..."
"...if you are experience a rear lamp failure your dealer will repair or provide you a replacement lamp assembly at no charge. At this time your dealer does not have the new design... the free initial repair will be made with the original design."
"...Spring of 2007, dealers will receive replacement lamp assemblies of a new design."
"At that time, MBUSA will provide you a second notice..."
Strangely MBUK know about this but won't respond to the same problem over here!
They state that the SAE and Euro bulbs are different....which is misleadingly correct.
However, my vehicle and several other customers are complaining of the same issue. Spark generated heat between the bulb holder and metal contact strips on the cluster body leads to melting/distortion of the main cluster housing.
Don't care whether the bulb is or is not different the same problem exists.
Intermittent brake lights, both sides, on auto used in heavy (London) traffic!!
