There should be a code on the outside of the tyre which says something like 235/45/17 or something.

The 235 = the width of tyre in mm
The 45 = the profile of the side wall (45%of the above 235mm)
The 17 = the size of the diameter in inches (17inch)

I don't know why nobody (including myself) thought of this before........ If you pull a wheel off, there should be numbers on the inside, on one of the spokes that give the wheel diameter and the wheel width. The numbers will be cast or forged in place...
